Battle Arena Toshinden 2 for the PlayStation is the sequel to Battle Arena Toshinden. As with its prequel it is a weapons-based 3D fighting game.

Though the core gameplay remains unchanged the game adds a simple combo system: Light Attack, Hard Attack, Special move. Though several characters have a couple of unqiue combo's that break this rule. The 3D movement has also been altered to better balance it in battle.

The Sega Saturn port by Nextech/Takara is named Toh Shin Den U.R.A. and is the follow-up of Toh Shin Den S (ported by Nextech/Sega). Another version of the PlayStation game was released in arcades by Capcom with altered music.

[edit] Story

When the Himitsu Kessha Organization discovered that the chief executive of the group, Gaia, had organized a Toshinden tournament behind their backs in order to start a rebellion, he was branded a traitor. Hence a new tournament is organized to lure him to his doom. Meanwhile, one of Gaia's former co-workers, named Uranus, has put the next stage of the organization's plan into action and hopes to not only eliminate Gaia from existence, but also the other nine fighters who participated in the last battle.

[edit] Other versions of Battle Arena Toshinden 2

Like Battle Arena Toshinden, Toshinden 2 was also ported to the Sega Saturn and Windows 95.

[edit] Toshinden URA (Sega Saturn)

Toshinden URA (full title "Ultimate Revenge Attack") is a Sega Saturn specific sequel to Toshinden Remix (aka Toshinden S). Though clearly based on Toshinden 2 for the PSX it was considerably altered with a specific 3D modelling named "Hyper Solid", all new arenas, a new story, a different CG intro, and four exclusive characters (Ripper, Replicant -an android version of Sho based on Blade Runner-, Ronron and Wolf) replacing four of Toshinden 2 PSX's characters (Gaia, Chaos, Uranus and Master). The gameplay also differs quite a bit (it plays somewhat like Toshinden with Toshinden 2's combo system). Ura means "back" in Japanese hence the main new character Ripper's winning posture (used in the Japanese front cover art) shows him from back.

[edit] Toshinden 2 PC (PC)

Toshinden 2 was also ported to the PC. It is a straight windows port with the ability to play in much higher resolutions than the PSX version (as high as your computer can go). It will also run at the speed of the computer meaning a slow down program is required to run it on new computers.

[edit] Toshinden 2 Plus (PSX)

A special edition of Toshinden 2 released only in Japan. It features notably enhanced graphics (in particular it uses particles instead of sprites) and improved control. It also makes a few balancing tweaks to the characters (examples include that Fo moves forward during his mystic sphere attack and the second hit of Dukes Knight Strike is much harder to connect with). An option to save your best times, option settings and unlocked characters to memory card was also added.
