After taking Bathini Fish Medicine the patient has to be under strict diet control for 45 days, as suggested by Bathini Family[2]. This medicine has to be taken for three consecutive years.

[edit] History Behind the Fish Medicine

According to Bathini Goud Family, their late great grand father Sri.Bathini veeranna Goud used to distribute a pot of Toddy along with white bread to the laborers who had been working hard, making them quench their thirst and also creating merriment in their hearts. He was kind, generous and charitable by nature; he practiced charity by giving to the poor free of cost, a part of what was sold.

In the year 1845 A.D, a holy man(Hindu saint) happened to meet Sri. Bathini Veeranna Goud. That holy man was impressed with Mr. Veeranna's nature and gave this secret formula of some miraculous "HERBS" and blessed the well and the place of administration of Medicine. He blessed Mr. Veeranna Goud with this gift and also instructed him to distribute this medicine "FREE of COST" to the sufferers of this dreaded disease.

The secret formula of this wonder cure was passed to Sri.Shiva Ram Goud who later passed it on to Sri.Shanker Goud. Popularity of this cure was greatly gained during Shanker Goud's tenure. The practice flowed down to the five sons of Shanker Goud. Since then, the formula of the medicine has been found quite effective in providing a complete cure if taken by a patient for three consecutive years. It has been the practice of the Goud family for the past 160 years to offer this medicine free to those who need it.

[edit] Controversy

Bathini Goud Family never disclosed the ingredients of the sample for the following reasons

  • Medicine formula or ingredients were not disclosed as they fear the medicine will lose its efficacy as their great grand father Sri.Veeranna Goud promised the sacred sage who gave him the herbs that he would distribute the medicine at free of cost and would never reveal the formula.
  • Exploitation of the medicine by others
  • Remedy will lose the potency if commercialised.

Though the Bathini Fish Medicine is being served from the last 160 years with no problems, lately in 2004 having seen the popularity of Bathini Fish Medicine grown not only in India but also Abroad through BBC[3] and CNN[4] .Following controversies were raised

  • A social organisation named Jana Vignana Vedika claims to be consisting of rationalists filed a petition in city court for not disclosing the ingredients of the medicine.
  • Scientists and Indian Medical Association who so far couldn't find the scientific medicine for Asthma forced the state government and high court to collect the samples to be verified with allegations that medicine might have contained steriods, heavy metals and mercury.

[edit] Rejection of Allegations

[edit] By Bathini Goud Family Response on June 6,2004

Bathini Goud Family handed over the sample for scientific analysis in 2004 and 2005, but found no harmful ingredients so far.The Bathini Goud Brothers - Viswanatham Goud and Harinath Goud -- who addressed a press conference on Sunday, brushed aside the allegations and said anyone could collect the samples if they came to the venue on June 8,2004(The day of serving the medicine).[5]

Asserting that the family had been doing the service free of cost without aspiring for fame, Mr. Harinath Goud said he and his brothers had been following the advice of their forefathers, who had administered the `medicine' without any personal gain since 1845. All these years, there were no casualties with the number of people only going up.

The Gouds further said that people receiving the medicine had to strictly observe the prescribed diet for 45 days. They also cautioned against several other people using their name and administering the `medicine' in other parts of the country and the world. "Our medicine will be given only in Hyderabad at the Exhibition Grounds on the day of `Mrigasira Karthi'," they said, adding that those who were raising a hue and cry over the standing of the medicine should first talk to patients who had experienced relief after taking it.

Meanwhile, an Allopathy doctor, Vinay T. of Begumpet, came out in support of the Bathini brothers, saying that three of his asthmatic patients who used to get regular attacks and were on regular use of allopathic medicines and inhalers for several years had not got a single attack in the past three years after taking fish medicine. Dr. Vinay's point was that those opposing the `medicine' should be more open-minded and accept the fact that none of the available treatment systems were complete by themselves.

"One cannot assess the mode of action of medicines of one system with the yardstick or principles of another system. If a treatment of a system helps at least a few patients, a real scientist should work on these few successful cases rather than condemning the unsuccessful ones," he said.

[edit] By Andhra Pradesh High Court Division Bench,[6] on January 27,2006

A Division Bench of the High Court made it clear that the court was not inclined to interfere and pass any orders regarding the administration of the `substance' popularly known as fish medicine.

The bench was closing petitions filed by the Jana Vignan Vedika (JVV) and others. The petitioners complained that even after it was established that the substance distributed by the Bathini Goud Brothers had no medicinal value, no action was initiated by the Government.

The bench pointedly asked two questions. One was whether the Bathini Goud Brothers claimed that this was medicine and if they were assuring cure for asthma. The second question was whether the substance contained any harmful material. The bench recorded the fact that the various established laboratories had analysed the substance and no one said that the substance contained harmful material. The bench reminded that if people flock to have a substance out of faith the courts cannot interfere.
