Bat Galim

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bat Galim is an area along the shore of Haifa, Israel. Bat Galim means "Daughter of the Waves". It is near the Haifa Seaport and it is home to the Haifa Bat Galim Central Bus Station, the Haifa Bat Galim Railway Station, and Rambam Hospital.

Its name comes from Isaiah 10:30, where "Bat-Galim" is mentioned as a village slightly north of Jerusalem. In that context, "galim" probably refers to heaps of stones which were located near the ancient village. However, in modern Hebrew "galim" means "waves", so the name was taken for the seaside neighborhood of Haifa.

It has beaches on its northwest and east edges. The eastern beach, which borders Haifa Bay, is known for quiet waves and is therefore called "Hof Hashaket".

Bat Galim is also slang for referring to the Railway Station.
