[edit] Photo

I was looking at your baseball photo and was going to write a joke about the hankie, until I saw you presaged my joke on the photo description - ha ha! --David Shankbone 16:10, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Import

Hey Bastique,

On the Automatically generated list of admins, you are listed as an import. What is an "import", if I may ask? It's not a term I've come across in the last four years of editing, you're the only one listed. Was this discussed somewhere? It's not really my concern, but my interest was piqued when I saw the term. Best wishes and happy editing, Firsfron of Ronchester 06:09, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

See m:Import. It's disabled on the English wiki project, and only available to developers and for office use. Cary Bass demandez 12:29, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
Ah! Thanks for the explanation. Best, Firsfron of Ronchester 18:45, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Dear Cary

Hi, dear Cary! :) In fact, I was already in conversation with this user via email myself; but following your thoughtful advice, I've decided to unprotect without further ado and see if I can help in the dispute. Keep me informed of any events that may require my participation or assistance, k? Love, Phaedriel - 22:13, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Portuguese

Hello. Yeah, I'm really interested in Portuguese. Just put a watch on my user page and talk page. Thanks for the tip.

[edit] Missing OTRS ticket

I noticed that the ticket referred to here does not exist. I did a search and couldn't locate anything. Can you advise? —Moondyne 15:50, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

It's ticket number 2007022710012152. The link is a link to the ticket itself. Cary Bass demandez 20:02, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Palm Harbor, Florida external links

User:Fisherjscott has added some external links to Palm Harbor, Florida that I'd removed before. Are they acceptable under WP:EL, or do they need to go? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikereichold (talkcontribs) 22:50, 29 September 2007

I suggest leaving the "taxing district" links and removing the "community links" as irrelevant to the article. Wikipedia is not a spam farm. Cary Bass demandez 12:50, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Pages using deprecated templates

Hi,
I'm encountering a rather perplexing problem that I can't seem to figure out. My user page ([1]), talk page ([2]) and main edits page ([3]) falls under "Category: Pages using deprecated templates" for some reason. There is a linking section common to the said pages but removing it still does not solve the "Category: Pages using deprecated templates" problem ([4]). Moreover the section exists in both my Sandboxes and they do not fall under "Category: Pages using deprecated templates" ([5])([6]).

I used personal templates for sections common to all the userpages before but requested for speedy delete; my request was accepted and I have no templates under my name now ([7]). Still I can't seem to shake "Category: Pages using deprecated templates" for reasons beyond my understanding.

Kindly help me out on this.
With Regards,
Havelok 17:20, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

I'm not that much of an expert. Sorry. Cary Bass demandez 18:04, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
Sorry for bombarding you with that complicated bit of a problem. I found out that WP has a Wikipedia:WikiProject Categories that ought to solve it.
Best Wishes,

[edit] California Miramar University

I noticed you removed California Miramar University from the list of office actioned pages. Is it alright to remove the semi-protection on this page now? --- RockMFR 05:51, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

My removal of office action has nothing to do with the level of page protection. Cary Bass demandez 15:05, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
@ RockMFR—I was under the impression that the office portion of the semi-protection had been removed from the page. Judging from the article history, I don't advise that semi-protection be removed, nor do I see any reason for the removal. Cary Bass demandez 18:11, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:Publix Logo.svg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Publix Logo.svg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 19:03, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] RfA thanks

Blah, blah blah, blah etc etc!! Thanks Cary - I did considered not spamming talk pages but not saying "thanks" just isn't me. The support was remarkable and appreciated here & elsewhere. --Herby talk thyme 12:48, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ruud Lubbers entry

Hi Cary: What is happening with this page? I have posted twice on the Ruud Lubber disc page and referenced that in a posting on mikegodwin's disc page (as he was the one who made the changes). This is the first time I have run into this even though I am quite familiar with BLP policy which I support. Do let me know if I am not following the correct procedure. In its present form, the entry is not only rather one-sided, it is not really very encyclopedic. --Joel Mc (talk) 14:04, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

I'll see if there's any movement on the issue. At this time, however, I'm unaware of any change to the status. Cary Bass demandez 14:20, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Arbitration Committee Elections thread on age

Hi Cary. This thread says you were the person to contact to disclose age identity. If you still are or know who is, would you please provide comment at this Arbitration Committee Elections thread. Thanks. -- Jreferee t/c 19:45, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your block of Giano

I believe it's common practice to report a block of an established contributor on ANI and ask for review. Were you planning to do that any time soon? If not, I will. Bishonen | talk 18:16, 23 November 2007 (UTC).

He was blocked under foundation auspices (see account). I've discussed the matter with Giano privately and unblocked him. Thanks. Cary Bass demandez 18:26, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
And left him autoblocked. Bishonen | talk 18:35, 23 November 2007 (UTC).
Yes, yes, yes, yes...please don't eat me. I don't do this that often dear... Cary Bass demandez 18:37, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
I'm embarrassed for you, dear. El_C 19:02, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
Why would you even write that on my talk page? Cary Bass demandez 19:03, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
Because your use of the word "dear" pushed me over the edge. El_C 19:09, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
I was speaking with familiarity with someone I believe myself to be on friendly terms with. Cary Bass demandez 19:10, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
I regret that my own tone was unclear, as it must have been. I tried to sound matter of fact, and hoped to convey that I don't see anything amusing or light in your threats and block against Giano. (But perhaps I'm bad at expressing such subtleties.) Nor anything *endearing*. On the contrary, it strikes me with a chill to see Durova protected at Giano's expense by the Foundation power structure, of which you are part. I can't take seriously the notion that there's anything worth hiding in the so-called "evidence" against User:!!. I mean, I can't see any respectable reason for hiding it, deleting it, blocking and threatening people over it. The reason for doing that is presumably a choice made between the two users, a definition of their value and their role, as thus: Durova is a valuable user who deserves protecting against having her methods revealed by Giano, who in turn deserves blocking like a troll. And yet: which of them has acted without consideration of self in this affair? Giano has risked, or more realistically has given up, his chances in the arbcom election for the sake of the project, and for the sake of the abused user:!!. How Durova has acted, you know. And it's Giano you block? No, we're not on terms where I like you to speak jocularly to me, Bastique.
I notice btw that you still haven't posted your block for review. Do you, too, like Durova, labour under the notion that a block is nothing because it's short? That a short block is just a matter of "delaying" a person's editing for such-and-such a time? That's a mistake. Bishonen | talk 23:22, 23 November 2007 (UTC).
That is a mischaracterization of the situation. If you like to discuss an office-level action, I'm happy for you to email me. Cary Bass demandez 23:32, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Can you please clarify what you meant here by "DMCA issues"? My address is sethf-at-sethf-dot-com if you want to reply by email. Disclosure - I'm asking in my capacity as a columnist. -- Seth Finkelstein (talk) 20:18, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikinews

Hi Cary - Could you take part in this discussion Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard#Wikinews_redux about Wikinews interviews being considered reliable sources. There is a wealth of evidence out there that Wikinews is, in fact, a reliable source. Tom Tancredo featured our interview with him on his Presidential blog; our Ingrid Newkirk was featured on a PETA bloog; Frank Messina has a link to his interview on his Website; so does Evan Wolfson; so does the Church of Satan. John Reed left comments on the comment page of his interview and features it on his MySpace. I have e-mails with virtually all of my interviewees verifying they have read them. It's just...a non-issue. Craig Unger, in particular, appears to be a flash point because he has written some explosive books; that said, he has never been sued nor discredited. He is a contributing editor to Vanity Fair, former deputy editor of the New York Observer and former editor-in-chief of Boston Magazine, as well as a fellow at New York University Law School. I think the issue is boils down to: is Wikinews a reliable source for the word of notable people (Tashi Wangdi, the Dalai Lama's representative; Al Sharpton; Senator Sam Brownback, et. al.)? I think the answer is clearly yes, especially since they are transcriptions. The second issue is: do we interview notable people? The issue is again, clearly, yes. In the same section on where Unger is cited (who is used on other articles as a source, including Dick Cheney) we also cite Bob Woodward and other journalists. It's notable that the person who has raised this issue is someone I have constantly--constantly--tussled with and I have continually asked him to stop engaging me, but he seems intent on pushing this issue that it may require Wikimedia to make it's views known on the role Wikinews can, and does, play on Wikipedia. --David Shankbone 20:16, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Trolling

One final thought and then I'll leave you to it... Calling it 'trolling' does not make it 'trolling'...

I posted a rational and legitimate response on your talkpage, as part of an on-going discussion thread. The fact that you didn't enjoy the tone of the thread does not make the thread trolling, and the fact that you didn't like my concise response, did not qualify my post as trolling either.

The fact is, you are avoiding personal responsibility and I called you on it. Then you managed to 'remove' the legitimate, if somewhat harsh, post during your expeditious archive.

It's ironic that my post involved burying and covering up, and that's exactly what you did.

Personally, I'm disgusted with the protection efforts that come all the way from the top of the organization. And I'm sorry that you take my honest and forthright communication as trolling.

Best regards, Lsi john (talk) 00:46, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

Commenting on the archiving issue, I believe that some editors will come to the opinion that it's better to debate controversial actions in a more public forum like the ANI board, so that the discussion can't be suddenly closed when the editor at the center of the discussion decides to archive it mid-stream. Cla68 (talk) 02:13, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
At least Bastique left a link to the archives. SlimVirgin used to archive difficult questions presented to her on her talk page without including a link to her archives. Cla68 (talk) 02:18, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

All deleting does is make people go elsewhere on the web to review the activities at wikipedia. WAS 4.250 (talk) 13:19, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Republication of emails without author's consent

Any time I am notified of an email published on a page without the authors permission, I remove it. I have always done this. This statement I garnered from Mike Godwin, who is much more eloquent than I (hence the delay in response) best explains the reasoning:

Although we encourage self-expression by users on their talk pages, we do not allow reproduction of other authors' expression on talk pages, absent (a) the other authors' permission or (b) an expressed and justified claim that reproduction of the other authors' expression is lawful under the law of copyright.

Regarding the "Evidence" claim; removal of this email which led to this particular notice does not constitute "suppression" by any means. If the email is as prevalent and widespread as the claims indicate, then suppression is irrelevant. Evidence may be submitted to the proper venue. Cary Bass demandez
