Talk:Basilica of Saint Mary
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Oldest Basilica in North America is Basilica of Notre-Dame in Québec City, It was designated a Basilica in 1874, by Pope Pius IX and as such is the first church in North America to be designated a basilica. Saint Mary in Minnesota was not built until 1907-1915 and was not elevated to Basilica until 1926 by Pope Pius XI. Bmpower | Talk 10:50, 16 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Not the oldest basilica in North America. There are 4 basilicas in Canada older than Saint Mary. They include:
- Cathedral Basilica of Notre-Dame de Québec in Quebec City - Designated Basilica in 1874 by Pope Pius IX
- Cathedral Basilica of Notre-Dame in Ottawa - Designated Basilica in 1879 by Pope Leo XIII
- Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré in Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, Quebec - Designated Basilica in 1887 by Pope Leo XIII
- Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady Queen of the World and St. James in Montreal - Designated Basilica in 1919 by Pope Benedict XV
