There should be a separate page or section for baseball mitts as opposed to gloves; gloves have distinct fingers, mitts do not.

[edit] Six finger glove

Some baseball gloves have six fingers, with the last finger stitched up, does anyone know what purpose this serves?

  • I've never seen this. PSzalapski 15:35, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
  • I believe Rawlings began this in what they call the "Trap-Eze". Look here www.rawlings.com FEVB (talk) 18:20, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] no fingers in first baseman's mitts?

I have used several first baseman's mitts over the years and never seen one that didn't have individual fingers on it. Maybe the front page should be changed?

  • I was under the impression that Catchers and then first baseman wore "Mitts"(as in mittens) since they often lacked finger hols and they were early attempts to catch the ball without making full hand contact. They thrown ball in the early days were usually harder than the variable speed from a bat. Early "webbed" first baseman gloves are displayed at Cooperstown without individual fingers.
  • perhaps this is correct, but I think ALL modern day first baseman's mitts do have individual fingers.
  • The mitts have "individual fingers" inside, but the outside is usually a continuous leather piece, not the distinct fingers that fielder's gloves have.
  • Yes, a quick google search will show you that first basemen's gloves do not have individual fingers on the outside with the exception of the thumb. FEVB (talk) 18:21, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] When did they start becoming oversized?
