In German Basketball, the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) is the highest level club competition where play determines the national champion.

A national basketball league was first organized for play in 1939. The first title was won by LSV Spandau. With the beginning of Second World War, league play came to an end. Not until 1947 was the second basketball championship decided.

The Basketball Bundesliga was created as a pro player league in 1966. Between 2001 and 2003 the league had a sponsored name; it was called "s.Oliver BBL".

Today, eighteen teams compete in the highest level of play. The team holding the record for title championships is Bayer Giants Leverkusen, who have won 14 championships. Since 1997, however, ALBA Berlin has dominated the league, winning their 7th title in 2003 as a result. 21 teams have won the championship since its inception.
