BasicNeeds

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

BasicNeeds is a UK-based international non-governmental organization, which works with mentally ill people in the developing world to alleviate their poverty and help them secure their basic rights.

The organization uses a model of working, called the Model for Mental Health and Development, created by its Founder Director, Chris Underhill, MBE. The Model has 5 parts: Capacity Building, Community Mental Health, Sustainable Livelihoods, Research and Management and Administration. The aim of the model is to demonstrate that cost-effective community mental health care can be introduced into poor communities in developing countries and that mentally ill people can advocate for and secure their own human rights.

So far the organization has helped over 41,000 poor mentally ill people in India, Sri Lanka, Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Colombia and Lao PDR.
