Based on a True Story is the debut album of American R&B singer Lil' Mo. In late 1999, Lil' Mo released her first single, "If You Wanna Dance", it didn't reach the charts, nor did it get much airplay success, but did get anticipation from fans. During 1999, Lil' Mo's single, "5 Minutes", which was from Why Do Fools Fall in Love Soundtrack, and from Lil' Mo's upcoming album, "Based On A True Story" didn't get much success (along with "If You Wanna Dance"),which caused Lil' Mo's album, to be pushed back to late 2000, instead of spring 2000. In mid 2000, Lil' Mo released her single, "Ta Da", which reached number 21 on R&B/Hip Hop Singles charts, and number 95 on Hot 100 charts. During 2000, Lil' Mo announced her new track, "Starstruck" (featuring Missy Elliott), would be released sometime before the release of her debut, but sadly, it was never released, nor was it featured on the album, but when Lil' Mo met new rapper, Fabolous, she had an idea to release a single with him. In late 2000, Lil' Mo's album, "Based On A True Story", was to be pushed back to early 2001, due to Lil' Mo retooling her album, and collaborating with different producers. In March 6, 2001, Lil' Mo released her next single, "Superwoman Pt. II" (featuring Fabolous), instead of "Superwoman Part 1" (which was taken off of "Based On A True Story", and replaced by Pt. II of the song). "Superwoman Pt. II" seemed to be the biggest hit for Mo, and proved a success for the singer, the single reached number 4 on R&B/Hip Hop Singles charts, and number 11 on Hot 100 charts. After the release of "Superwoman Pt. II", Lil' Mo released her album, "Based On A True Story", which reached number 6 on R&B/Hip Hop Albums charts, and was certified Gold by the RIAA. Soon after the album was released, Lil' Mo released her next single, "Gangsta" (featuring Snoop Dogg), it reached 39 on Rhythmic Top 40 charts, and didn't get very much success as her other singles.
