Flag of Northern Ireland debate

You have been involved in the flag debate on the Northern Ireland talk page. If you remember there were four option listed about the way forward. If you wish you can go here and make your position clear. regards--Vintagekits 21:56, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Barry, I screwed up the NI infobox a bit and couldn't fix it. The removal of the banner was my only intention; I find the workings of these boxes very mysterious. (Sarah777 00:57, 3 March 2007 (UTC))

Briton

Posted from my talk page.

Just to tell you I have reverted your edits to Briton, the article is about citizens of the United Kingdom that includes people who where not born there. --Barry entretien 20:17, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

I think that you're mistaken. The article is about the modern identity. British citizens are covered by another article. Even then, one should be weary about reducing the number to 60 million as there are millions more British citizens in the world than the 60 million people who reside in the United Kingdom. As an ethnic identity, more than 100 million people are of British heritage, and not all British citizens are indigenous Britons, with about 10% having no native/first nation connection to the land at all. Vandals at the gates

Thanks Barry! I can now get one of those counter-Userboxes that say..."This Userpage has been vandalised x times". I guess it is probably one of the chaps from a couple of articles where I have had to revert the SAME vandalism over and over. Regards (Sarah777 20:02, 18 March 2007 (UTC))

City coat of arms removal

Why did you remove the city of arms for Berlin in the Germany article? Is this a new WP policy? If so, I should probably have the coat of arms for Washington DC removed from the United States article. Regards, Signaturebrendel 23:32, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

I plan to remove them from all country articles as their inclusion in the infobox is pointless I was mearly starting with EU countries --Barry O'Brien entretien 23:40, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

WTF are you doing wee man? Why have you reverted the logo from one party when all the parties in Nortern Ireland biogs have them? Given your userboxes this looks sectarian in nature. JAMES CRAIG, 1ST VISCOUNT CRAIGAVON

Dear Barry:

Re: James Craig, 1st Viscount Craigavon, re the assertion that he was "staunchly anti-Catholic"; this is received information/opinion as well as inflammatory and unsubstantiated POV as it currently stands. If you can prove this assertion rather than just key in stereotypes it can stay. Otherwise it is POV and unencyclopaedic. I hope (based on the info. on your user page) that you can be objective. Castle Greyskull

Dear He-Man, Castle Greyskull is not an "affectionate" term for Ibrox Stadium but an abusive term used by Celtic fans. License tagging for Image:Dundee logo.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Dundee logo.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 06:07, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

You are mistaken

All I did was edit the appearance of the template to fit that of Parliamentary Acts. I did not alter the constitution of the template, by adding or subtracting any link. The topics are not universal in scope, but dated to a certain time and procession of events in the government. It is proper to display the Acts of Parliament in the way Parliament would, to accurately represent what they had done. This leaves no room for spin, but it does give depth to the issue. French Fourth Republic

Hi, I saw you changed the successor of the French Fourth Republic back to France instead of the French Fifth Republic, after I had done it the other way around over a week ago. Could you explain to me why France should be the successor? Oliphaunt 21:53, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

moving your comment on my talk page here to preserve context:
Because France is the French Fifth Republic the French Fifth Republic page just describes the current politial situation whereas France is the actual country . --Barryob Vigeur de dessus 21:59, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
Well, I don't really agree with that line of thought; the Fourth Republic was also in the 'actual country' of France. The country didn't spring into existence when the Fourth Republic ended; the Fifth Republic did (well, it didn't 'spring', but you catch my drift). Someone interested in the history of the governments/constitutions of France is much better served with a link to the current government/constitution as a successor state than to the country which already existed anyway.
By the way, feel free to reply here. I've put your talk page on my watchlist. Oliphaunt 22:10, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
But as I said the France page is the French Fifth Republic the box is designed to show the successor country not the constitution of the successor country --Barryob Vigeur de dessus 02:55, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
The article France isn't limited to the Fifth Republic; it is about the country and in its history section lists lots of governments. If we can't reach agreement (no problem there in itself) I guess I'll post this on the talk page to French Fourth Republic.

Image:Countyclare-crest.png

Hello Barryob, an automated process has found an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, such as fair use. The image (Image:Countyclare-crest.png) was found at the following location: User:Barryob/Sandbox. This image or media will be removed per statement number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media will be replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. The image that was replaced will not be automatically deleted, but it could be deleted at a later date. Articles using the same image should not be affected by my edits. I ask you to please not re-add the image to your userpage and could consider finding a replacement image licensed under either the Creative Commons or GFDL license or released to the public domain. Please note that it is possible that the image on your page is included vie a template or usebox. In that case, please find a free image for the template or userbox. Thanks for your attention and cooperation. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 11:21, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Image:Cc big home.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Cc big home.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. YNWA

This song is most associated with Liverpool Football Club, period. Until solid evidence is produced (see YNWA talk page), there is no reason why Celtic's sporadic embrace should be given greater prominence than any other club. smb 02:56, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

The song is most associated with Liverpool and Celitc and I have added a ref to this. --Barryob Vigeur de dessus 11:20, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
I repeat, in the world of soccer, the song "You'll Never Walk Alone" is most immediately associated with Liverpool Football Club. The evidence clearly shows that Celtic supporters adopted it at a much later date, in the 1980s, more than 20 years after it was firmly established with Liverpool. Given these facts, I do not consider Celtic's late embrace relevant. Both Fulham and Ipswich sung YNWA long before Celtic, and several other clubs flirted with it (especially on big match occasions). Please provide a persuasive reason why other clubs should be given equal prominence on a page that is principally about music. You cannot seriously contend that it is better associated with Liverpool and Celtic by virtue of the fact both sets of supporters now sing it -- that is circular argumentation. Please study and respect the evidence. Thanks smb 14:22, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
p.s. Your reference (this [1]) further strengthens my position. Celtic's claim on this song is self-evidently very, very flimsy. smb 14:28, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
How about a google search YNWA Liverpool 806,000 Celtic 446,000 Ipswich Town 56,200, Celtic and liverpool are the two teams the song is most associated with --Barryob Vigeur de dessus 15:15, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
You are mistaken. A Google search for Liverpool produces 429,000 results [2] while Celtic returns only 42,000 hits [3] (a figure more than nine times higher). In any case, you appear to be missing the point. There is absolutely no reason to highlight other soccer clubs the song has become associated with. The basic, factual details are already in place. Celtic is correctly placed on a list of clubs who adopted the song at a later point in time. However, by removing Celtic from the list and onto the main section, you also alter the meaning of the page to imply that Celtic adopted the song at the same time as Liverpool, when this is flatly false. In addition, if we plunge this slippery slope, then why elevate only two such clubs - why not three, four or possibly five? Is it because you want to lend greater significance and weight to Celtic than is historically accurate? Please, before reverting the main page (again), I respectfully request that you address these and the many other points raised on the talk page. smb 16:52, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

I thought my additions were highly accurate.

Fair use rationale for Image:Scottishhydrologo.JPG

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Scottishhydrologo.JPG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:20, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

"Teachtaí Dála of the Dáil Éireann"

The grammar is terrible. You cannot say "the Dáil Éireann" or "an Dáil Éireann" because "Éire" is a definite noun. More correct would be "Teachtaí Dála of Dáil Éireann". But then we have the problem of the plural of TDs in English. Also the section itself should go below the election boxes, since those are what people look for first. Where can this be discussed so that there is uniformity in article format? See Cavan-Monaghan_(Dáil_Éireann_constituency) -- Evertype· 09:55, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

I do not speak Irish so I cannot help you with your first point as for the second, it is standard to have members before the election resutls as this is what is done with constituencies for other legislatures including the old Parliament of Ireland constituencies and Irish constituencies to the UK Parliament. --Barryob Vigeur de dessus 16:06, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 16:03, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Please stop edit warring

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions in a content dispute within a 24 hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing. Please do not repeatedly revert edits, but use the talk page to work towards wording and content which gains a consensus among editors. --John 17:59, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

I don't care that you think you are right. Every edit warrior does. I am asking you, nicely, to stop edit warring. That is not how we do business here.--John 18:36, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
