Because it is confusing and inaccurate nonsense - the species cited all have bark
Scientific articles don't start with quotes
If it is a quote (which I have no reason to suppose it is), it should include the details of the person making the quote

It's not confusing nor is it inaccurate, a quotation can be factually incorrect and still be accurate.
I've never seen any official wiki policy on which articles may start with quotes and which may not.
You have a reason to suppose it is an "actual quote", WP:AGF.
