Bartolomeo Ramos

Bartolomeo Ramos de Pareja (b. Baeza, ca. 1440; d. 1491 or later) ("Ramos" is sometimes spelled "Ramis") was a Spanish music theorist of the Renaissance, who published an important treatise in 1482, describing 5-limit musical tuning for the first time since ancient days. His book Musica practica (1482) first labeled the manus Guidonis or Guidonian Hand, a method of using the joints of one's hand to represent specific musical notes and indicate them to singers. This method was developed in the late thirteenth century, several hundred years after Guido d'Arezzo's death at approx. 1050 CE. Prior to Ramos, the method was called the manus musicalis. The title Musica practica was a term for the actual performance of music, as opposed to musica theoretica the mathematical science of music and its ratios which was a direct continuation of the math and theory of Pythagoras.
