Bartlehiem is a hamlet, located partially in Ferwerderadiel, partially in Tytsjerksteradiel, and partially in Leeuwarderadeel. It is known for its role in the Elfstedentocht: As Bartlehiem - Dokkum is the only part of the route that is skated both ways, Bartlehiem is the only spot along the route where you can see skaters in three directions.
The name could either be derived from Bethlehem, or it simply mean something like "Home of Bartels", as Hiem is old Dutch for home (compare 'heim' in German).
