Barry Saunders

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Barry Saunders is a popular African-American columnist for the News and Observer, a Triangle-area newspaper. His articles appear every Tuesday and Friday in the Metro section, and in the Opinion section on Saturdays. He lives in Durham and his articles often center on recent happenings in the city. His writings can be somewhat controversial, and high-profile local officials often write to him to complain after being criticized in one of his articles. The most recent occurrence of this is a city official who wrote to disagree with Saunders on his take on the November 2007 Durham mayorial election and its focus on crime.

[edit] Early life

Saunders grew up in Rockingham, North Carolina.[1] As a teenager he had a job picking up litter at the now-defunct NASCAR racetrack. He attended Morehouse College in Atlanta.
