Barry Matthews

Barry Matthews is the current Chief Executive of the New Zealand Department of Corrections. He replaced Mark G Byers in February 2005.

Matthews worked in public sectors of New Zealand and Australia for almost four decades. He was in the New Zealand Police from 1965 to 1999. In 1995, he became the Deputy Commissioner of the New Zealand Police. Four years later he left to take up his appointment as Commissioner of the Western Australia Police.[1]

While in the New Zealand Police, Matthews was also Assistant Commissioner Planning and Finance, Police National Headquarters (1993 to 1995) and District Commander, Auckland Services District (1992 to 1993).[1]

He has a Masters Degree in Business Administration, Law Professional examinations, a Bachelor of Laws Degree and a Diploma of Criminology.[1]
