Barricada was an Official organ of FSLN during the Sandinista revolutionary period. The first issue was published on 26 July of 1979 and its stated goal was to promote the revolutionary project of the revolutionary regime. In the early days "Barricada" was hardly a competitor with La Prensa, but it was able to secure the support of East Germany. Specialists from the USSR built adequate poligraphic base and supplied paper. Unlike La Prensa, Barricada was not subject to censorship and coercion by the government.
