Barrett Gibson Lyon (born March 18, 1978) is known as an "Internet Influencer" has been pushing advancements in the Internet from an entrepreneurial, artistic, and philosophical direction[1].

He is the creator of the Opte Project, which is an Internet mapping project. The project has gathered support world-wide and is featured at the Boston Museum of Science[2] and The Museum of Modern Art[3].

Lyon's work tracking Russian Denial of service attack extortion groups has been featured around the globe[4]. He provided details and helped coordinate with multinational law enforcement groups which resulted in the capture of Ivan Maksakov[5]. Maksakov was at the heart of an extortion ring which was extorting money from banks, Internet casinos, and other web based businesses. Reported damages caused by Maksakov range in the the tens of millions of dollars. On October 8th 2007, Maksakov and three others were found guilty and sentenced to eight years in prison in the Russian Federation with a 100,000 ruble penalty[6].

During the time Lyon worked with law enforcement, he created the world's first distributed denial of service attack (DDoS) filtering system[7]. The service was provided via his company Prolexic Technologies, which later was sold to an investment group[8].

Currently, Lyon is a proponent in advancing the Internet's ability to scale video to the masses[9] and is the CTO and co-founder of BitGravity a content delivery network[10].
