Barquiel L'Envers

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Legacy series, Duc Barquiel L'Envers is an important nobleman, the full brother of the dead Isabel L'Envers de la Courcel. Barquiel is pale-skinned, with white-blond hair that he keeps cropped quite short, and violet eyes.

He was assigned the role of Ambassador to Khebbel-im-Akkad at the beginning of Kushiel's Dart in order to assuage tensions from Khebbel-im-Akkad. He has since become fond of the Akkadian style of dress and similarly keeps his hair cropped short, unusual for a D'Angeline. An adept politician, Barquiel spends a great deal of time in the Khalifate, and weds his daughter to the Khalif's son. He sends Rogier Clavel to the City of Elua to ask King Ganelon to allow him to return to Terre d'Ange after the wedding, which is granted.

[edit] During Kushiel's Dart

In Kushiel's Dart, Anafiel Delaunay does not trust and detests Barquiel L'Envers. The feeling seems to be mutual. Phèdre nó Delaunay learns during an assignation that Childric D'Essoms answers to Barquiel L'Envers; telling this to Delaunay as a very juicy piece of information.

Upon Phèdre's return to the City of Elua, Ysandre de la Courcel calls an audience of those peers she can trust to tell about Phèdre's news of a coming Skaldic invasion and treachery within Terre d'Ange. Among those in attendance is Barquiel, who prooves himself to be loyal to his niece Ysandre. When the Skaldic troops begin flooding in from Camlach, Barquiel leads two hundred Akkadian-taught horsemen against them. He is present at the Battle of Troyes-le-Mont, and is in fact the one to bring Phèdre nó Delaunay and Joscelin Verreuil behind the safety of fortress' walls.
