Baron Swaythling
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Baron Swaythling, of Swaythling in the County of Southampton, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1907 for the prominent Jewish banker, Liberal politician and philanthropist Samuel Montagu. He had already been created a Baronet, of Swaythling in the County of Southampton, in 1894. As of 2007 the titles are held by his great-great-grandson, the fifth Baron, who succeeded his father in 1998.
Several other members of the family also gained distinction. The first Baron's second son was Edwin Samuel Montagu, a Liberal politician and the husband of Venetia Stanley, while the medical researcher Philip D'Arcy Hart was his grandson. Also, Lord Swaythling was the younger brother of the Liberal Member of Parliament Sir Stuart Montagu Samuel, 1st Baronet (see Samuel Baronets) and the uncle of Liberal politician Herbert Samuel, 1st Viscount Samuel. Ewen Montagu, famous for conceptualizing Operation Mincemeat, was the second son of the 2nd Baron.
