Baron Grey of Powis

This article is about Baron Grey of Powis. For the title Baron Powis, see Earl of Powis.

The Barons Grey de Powis were descended from one of the coheiresses of Edward Charleton, 5th Baron Cherleton the last to hold the title. They were marcher lords of Powys. Richard Grey attended Parliment in 1455, making him a baron. On the death of the 4th Baron in 1551, the barony became extinct.

  • The senior coheiress, Joan de Cherleton (c.1400-1425) married John Grey or Gray of Heaton in Norham, Northumberland, who was created Count of Tancarville (1384-1421).
  • Henry Grey of Welshpool (1418-1450), 2nd Count of Tancarville (their son) married Antigone of Gloucester, an illegitimate daughter of Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester. Her paternal grandparents were Henry IV of England and Mary de Bohun.

  • Richard Grey of Pool (b. at Pontesbury, 5 November 1436--17 December 1466 swore allegience to Henry VI in Parliament in 1455 (as Sir Richard Grey Lord of Powes) and is thus regarded as Baron Grey of Powis in the Peerage of England.
  • John Grey, 2nd Baron Grey of Powis (14601497) was summoned to Parliament on 15 November 1482, shortly after attaining his majority.
  • John Grey, 3rd Baron Grey of Powis (14851504)
  • Edward Grey, 4th Baron Grey of Powis (died 1551)
