Barnabas Root

Barnabas Root (Born Fahma Yahny in West Africa) was one of the first Black men to receive a college degree in Illinois. He completed a bachelor's degree at Knox College in 1870. He is Knox's first "international" student and first Black male graduate. He went on to earn a divinity degree at Chicago Theological Seminary and later was a physician and medical missionary in Africa.
