The village has a long history and was originally a market town with a coaching inn. For more history see (http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=23017). The village has a church, dedicated to St Catherine, and a primary school. The former school house now houses a Kids Club and a Pre-School, both charities and both run by committed locals. There is a village shop, which has moved recently into a new purpose-built home, a post office and a pub, The Boot & Slipper, which is well supported by the village.

The nearby town of Pocklington has a wealth of other shops including two supermarkets together with bakers, butchers and clothes shops etc. Further afield York, Hull and Beverley are the nearest larger places.
