Barm cake

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Barm cake is a traditional bakery item, now rarely available in its original form even in the North West of England, where it originated. It is distinct from a simple bread roll. Flat like an american Hamburger Bun, and floured on top, the original barm cake has a characteristically strong flavour that comes from the traditional barm leaven made from a natural leaven with the addition of hops. However, the readily available Barm Cake has been made from commercial yeast since the mid 20th century.[citation needed]

The barm cake is different from a simple hamburger bun as they are unavailable frozen, and are of a much higher quality.

Chips are the most popular filling, as sold in all fish and chip shops in the north west of England. A chip barm cake is normally requested and recognised as a 'chip barm'. In cafes, the barm cake has been used to sell a variety of produce, such as bacon, eggs, sausages, black pudding, or even a full breakfast.
