Barkakana is a census town in Hazaribag district in the state of Jharkhand, India.

As of 2001 India census,[1] Barkakana had a population of 16,872. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Barkakana has an average literacy rate of 68%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 60% of the males and 40% of females literate. 13% of the population is under 6 years of age. Surrounded by hills. Sri Naryan High school is present there. Subdivision of Eastern railway's Dhanbad zone.
