Barbie film series

The Barbie film series is a series of movies featuring the Barbie character from Mattel. Though Barbie has been featured in animated films since the 1980s, for example: Barbie and the Rockers: Out of this World, in 2001 a CGI series was launched. These films usually fall into one of two categories, either a Princess story or a Fairytopia story. (The Barbie Diaries which features Barbie as a typical American teenager stands alone). Kelly Sheridan has portrayed Barbie in all of the films. All of the films have had a line of Barbie products and characters launched in conjunction with the release. The films include:

In 2001, Barbie in the Nutcracker was released. The film is adapted from E. T. A. Hoffmann's story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. It received extremely high sales, prompting the continuation of the series.

In 2002, Barbie as Rapunzel came out, based on the story by the Brothers Grimm and starring Anjelica Huston. It received generally positive reviews.

Barbie of Swan Lake was released in 2003. The story is loosely adapted from the Swan Lake ballet and features the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
[edit] The Princess and the Pauper
Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper was launched and promoted as "Barbie's first musical" in 2004. This release was heavily marketed and even had its own float in the 2004 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. It is loosely based on the Mark Twain story The Prince and the Pauper. It is not, however, related to the 1939 film The Princess and the Pauper.

Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus, released in 2005, is a variable of the Princess rescuing the prince theme.

The Barbie Diaries features Barbie in a typical family setting telling stories to her younger sister. It was released in 2006.

Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses (2006) is loosely based on the fairytale "The Twelve Dancing Princesses."

2007's Barbie as the Island Princess places Barbie on an island in the Pacific Ocean.

Barbie and the Diamond Castle is scheduled for a 2008 release.
