Subramaniya Barathi, Mahakavi Barathi, Barathiyar or shortly Barathi was a twentienth Century Tamil Poet who revolutionised Tamil Poetic landscape by abruptly turning its focus from posh palaces to humble street corners. He was known for his forceful espousal for liberation of India from the clutches of imperial Britain.
Charecterised by his headgear made of fabric (known as Tahalai Pagai) Barathi infused enthusiasm to liberation movement and he was also one of few flagbearers of reformist kind of patriats.
His works made of traditional type poems (comparable to meters in English) covered various socially relevant topics including national freedom, emancipation of women, affection to language Tamil etc.
