Bapatla Engineering College (BEC) located in Bapatla, Andhra Pradesh, India is considered one of the premier technical educational institutions in Andhra Pradesh.

[edit] Historical Background

Bapatla Engineering College was established in the year 1981 by the then MP Kona Prabhakar Rao, with a total intake of 180 students in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electronics and Communications Engineering branches. The college was initially affiliated to Andhra University and later to Nagarjuna University from 1984 onwards. An additional section with an intake of 60 was sanctioned for the Mechanical Engineering branch in 1987. From year 1994, The College embarked on programs of expansion in terms of courses and intake, infrastructure and facilities. Presently the college offers 9 B.Tech degree courses with an intake of 630. Additional 10% intake is through lateral admission in the second year. The College also offers 6 P.G. courses in sciences including MCA with a total intake of 234.

The College is situated a little away from the din and bustle of Bapatla, a medium sized town in Guntur District 40 miles (64 km) south of Guntur City, with a historic and hoary past, about 75 km south of Vijayawada on Chennai – Vijayawada rail route and is 15 km to chirala.

The Bapatla Engineering College, one of the six educational institutions sponsored by the Bapatla Education Society, was established in 1981 affiliated to Acharya Nagarjuna University. This college is considered as one of the top 10 colleges in Andhra Pradesh.

The College has also applied for Autonomous Status and an Inspection Committee constituted by Acharya Nagarjuna University has inspected the college on 15th June, 2004 and recommended to AICTE for grant of autonomous status to this college. The Institution of Engineers (India) accredited 8 B. Tech., programmes offered by the college based on the recommendations of the 6-Member Sub-committee of senior Professors from IISc, Bangalore constituted by it. Further, the Ministry of Surface Transport recognizes Mechanical Engineering course of the college.

This College is one of the 17 Colleges out of nearly 240 Engineering Colleges in Andhra Pradesh, which is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. Recently, this college has been selected as a Network Institute for the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) of the Ministry of Human Resources Development and the World Bank.

The 4 year B. Tech course is offered in nine branches, viz., Biotech, CE, Ch. E., CSE, ECE, EEE, EIE, IT and ME with total annual intake of 630 students. Two M. Tech courses, one in Mechanical Engineering branch with CAD / CAM specialization and the other in ECE branch with COMMUNICATIONS & SIGNAL PROCESSING specialization are also offered with effect from the academic year 2004-05. Apart from the courses in Engineering, the college offers six PG courses, viz., M. Sc. (Chemistry), M. Sc. (Computer Science), M. Sc. (Electronics), M. Sc. (Mathematics), M. Sc. (Physics) and MCA.

The teaching faculty consists of 9 Professors, 37 Asst. Professors and 138 Lecturers and tejeshvi is well supported by the 127 strong non-teaching staff. Out of 184 faculty members, 26 are with Ph. D. qualification and 86 are with M. Tech qualification. Others have B. Tech. / M. Phil. / MCA / M. Sc. qualification.

[edit] Academic Performance Of Students At University Level

The college has the distinctively rare tradition of bagging the University top ranks year after year. The College Students of 1995–‘99&1996-2000 batches bagged 33 University ranks out of 100. The College 1995-‘99 batch students secured University I & III ranks. University I ranks during 1996-2000, 1999-2003 and 2000-’04 were also bagged by the college students. The College secured the highest percentage of marks (92%) in the University Final Year in first appearance. University Ranks obtained during 2003-’04&2004-’05.

The College Library is very spacious having a plinth area of nearly 22,000 square feet (2,000 m²) and is acclaimed as one of the biggest in the State and includes CD ROMS & Audio-Video Cassettes in its collection. The Digital Library equipped with 26 computers is offering free Internet facility to all the students in addition to the access to DELNET, SONET and online international Journals.

The College Library is stocked with 45,045 books and 800 back volumes of periodicals. At present the college subscribes to 154 printed technical journals (including 70 foreign ones) and 308 Journals (online), besides almost all the important magazines and newspapers to cater adequately to the requirements of the students and the staff. The Book bank with about 12,057 volumes is of special value to students belonging to the weaker sections of the society.

The training and placement cell is committed to provide all possible assistance to graduate and post-graduate students to secure employment in multi-national companies and other reputed organizations and industries. The Training & Placement Cell extends its services round the year and facilitates contacts between companies and students. This cell helps the students to improve skills in related fields (soft skills, resume preparation, facing an interview, etc) and career guidance.

The College is housed on a spacious and well-planned 30 acre site with buildings of a total plinth area of about 400,000 sq ft (40,000 m²). and widely acknowledged to be a harmonious blend of aesthetics and functional utility. The cost of buildings is over Rs.13.6 crores while that of the laboratory equipment comes to Rs.8.25 crores.

With a view to derive the full benefit of morning hours, the class work is commenced at 7.30 AM. Thereby the students make the optimum use of the rich Library, English Communication Skills Lab, Computer Labs and playfield facilities in the afternoons.

The College believes in adequate facilities being provided for the development, both of brain and brawn. Accordingly, spacious playgrounds and other amenities for diverse sports such as cricket, tennis, volley ball, basket ball, shuttle badminton etc., and athletics are made available on the campus. Under the auspices of the cultural and literary associations, various personality development programmes are conducted throughout the year. A team from this college participates in the prestigious International software contest conducted by ACM every year and college encourages students to present the technical papers in the national and international level technical symposia.

The College has a campus hostel meant exclusively for girls. With a three storied building consisting of 87 rooms accommodating a maximum of 400 students, a spacious dining hall, TV & Audio Room, T.T. Room, Shuttle Badminton Court, standby generator, lush green lawns, flower gardens etc., not forgetting the near foolproof security arrangements, the hostel is considered a veritable home away from home by its inmates. A Computer Centre exclusively for the inmates of the hostel with free internet facility with network connection to the main Computer Centre of the College is also available.
