[edit] Hindus in Bangladesh now

User:Ragib has changed the number on Hindu population in Bangladesh to a higher number.

The claim that "The two major religions practiced in Bangladesh are Islam (83%) and Hinduism (16%)" is false. It overstates the population of Hindus by more than 50%.

There is some variation in the number reported, but the official [1] number is: 9.2%. [2][3]

"The Hindu population, the second largest religious group, has experienced a 50 percent decrease since Bangladesh came into being in 1971 after a-nine month armed struggle. The percentage of Hindu population has become half to 9.2 per cent from 18.5, according to the Bangladesh government's latest population census conducted in 2001."

Bangladesh government apparently avoids mentioning the number as much as possible, the the correct numbers are very hard to obtain. The numbers are not there on the BD census web-site.

Please do not mislead as you have done in your first sentence. The numbers (83%, 16%) were in the article for quite some time and were supported by the reference from CIA world fact book. *YOU* changed it without providing the reference to the new numbers. You had inserted the new numbers and added this as reference to your numbers "http://www.bbs.gov.bd]- [[CIA World Factbook]]". However, the CIA world fact book does not support the numbers you changed. Now that you have added a correct reference to the population numbers, there is no problem. But please do not make a fake assertion that I changed the number to a higher number ... that statistics was there for quite some time and backed by solid references. Finally, in case of demographic information, the official census report is the most authentic and reliable source. Thanks. --Ragib (talk) 20:23, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Apparently Bangladesh government has a hand in misleading the world. Unlike most other government they will avoid putting the current census data on the web, and sometime they will deliberately place the old data. see for example Country Profile. Where they say that:

  • "Capital : Dhaka : Area-1416 Sq.Km. Population 9.9 million in 2001"

Thus they have access to 2001 data. But then they use the old data:

  • "Religion (Census 1991) : Islam (88.3%), Hinduism (10.5%), Buddhism (0.6%) and Christianity(0.3%)"

I wonder what the Hindu population is there in 2007?

<sarcasm>Yeah, apparently, CIA itself has gotten involved in this conspiracy ... that's why the US Govt. managed organization is trying to mislead the world by having the Hindu population listed at 16% [1] in the CIA World Factbook. And not to be outdone, Encyclopedia Britannica is also in the employ of the notorious Bangladeshis ... and thereby counting the population numbers at 12% [2]!!! </sarcasm> --Ragib (talk) 02:01, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
It is surprising that the govt actually has religious stats. If I am not mistaken, during the National Census, people are not asked about their religious affiliations. So, how do these stats of religious affiliations show up? In either case, if you have an issue with governance in a certain country, I'm sure you'll find millions of rant forums on the Internet; WP is NOT the right place for that. All the reliable documents are saying it should be "Bangladeshi". We probably need to stick to it. But, if you have reliable sources that have a different opinion (i.e. "Bengali") and some others which document a Bengali-Bangladeshi debate, you may start putting it in. But, since this is a featured article, meaning its stability is important, you may put the rewritten part on this talk page first. Aditya(talk • contribs) 07:34, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
The Demonym is quite correctly "Bangladeshi". This has been officially so since the mid 1970s. Also, Bengali is an ethnicity, while Bangladeshi is a nationality. Not all citizens of Bangladesh are Bengalis ... there are Biharis and also Tribal people such as Chakmas, Manipuris -- all of whom are Bangladeshis, but NOT Bengalis. --Ragib (talk) 11:16, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Climate Change and Bangladesh

I was thinking we should add a section concerning this topic, or at least incorporate in the "Geography and Climate" section. The main article "Geography of Bangladesh" doesn't really cover the issue of global warming and rising water levels, which seriously threaten Bangladesh as well as West Bengal. I am not well informed enough to start a section, what do you guys think? Have you seen an Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth"? According to some reported climate trends, if things stay as they are going 60 million people in Bangladesh and West Bengal are at risk of displacement or death.--Taajikhan (talk) 20:35, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

User:Moshino31 is interested in adding subheadings to the "Demographics" section (for showing religion, population, ethnic group, etc.). I am against putting subheadings in the "Demographics" section because of the following reasons:

  • This is the main article on the country. Sections in this article are supposed to be summaries of the children articles
  • Demographics is a short section with info on population and its characteristics. Dividing it into subsections is artificial and is against the summary style that needs to be followed in the sections.
  • Unnecessary sections sub sections etc. add nothing but more clutter to the article.
  • per Wikipedia:COUNTRIES#Sections guidelines, the country level articles are supposed to be formed of short paragraphs on various topics of the country
  • there are several other country articles that are FA, let's look at them. India has a short demographics section, with no subheadings. Belgium, on the other hand, has a very large demographics section, which is justifiably divided into subsections. No such breakups in articles with short sections Cambodia, Cameroon, Canada, Chad, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Japan, Nauru,Peru, Turkey.

This article is a Featured article promoted after a lot of scrutiny and discussion. As shown above, majority of other country articles are not cluttered by adding unnecessary subheadings. --Ragib (talk) 12:15, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
