There is a problem with the image provided as an illustration of a banana connector - it hides the banana shape of the prong and so isn't helpful. The bowed metal sheathing around the prong is the key to the name, so I'm looking around for a "fair use" image of such a connector to offer as a substitute, unless someone else can provide one before I do.
