Banverket was formed in 1988 when Statens Järnvägar was split, leaving Statens Järnvägar as mainly a railway operator and real estate owner, only to be split again in 2001. Its headquarters are located in Borlänge, Sweden. The acting Director General of Banverket is currently Minoo Akhtarzand.
The Swedish Railway Inspectorate (Järnvägsinspektionen) was a part of Banverket until 2004, when the Swedish Rail Agency (Järnvägsstyrelsen) was formed, taking over its responsibilities.
