Bantul Regency

Bantul is the name of a regency and a town located in the province of Yogyakarta (special region), Indonesia. The regency's population is approximately 800,000. Like many regions on the island of Java, it is densely populated with roughly 1,600 people per square kilometer. The regency is bordered by the city of Yogyakarta to the north, the regencies of Kulon Progo and Sleman to the west, the Gunung Kidul Regency to the east and the Indian Ocean to the south.
The village Kemusuk is the birthplace of President Suharto.
[edit] 2006 Earthquake
On 27 May 2006 an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck near Java's southern coast causing widespread damage. Bantul Regency was the region most affected by the disaster. More than 2,000 residents of Bantul were killed, thousands of its residents injured, and 80% of its homes damaged or destroyed.[1]
