The first Banknotes of Zimbabwe were issued in 1980, following the declaration of independence. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe currently issues Zimbabwe's banknotes.
The large denominations and a shift to Bearer Cheques in the 2000s reflect the declining situation in Zimbabwe's economy.
Bearer Cheques were first issued on 15 September 2003. The highest denomination currently in circulation is the emergency 50,000,000,000 dollar Agro Cheque, whilst in 1980 the regular 20 dollar banknote was the highest denomination issued.
