Bangladesh National University (Bengali: বাংলাদেশ জাতীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) is a parent university of Bangladesh which was primarily established to affiliate all the universities and colleges. It is situated in Gazipur. Just outskirts of capital city Dhaka.

National University was established in 1992 under an Act of the Govt. of the People's Republic of Bangladesh with features distinct from those of the traditional Universities of the country. It grew out of the exigencies of time who most of the Universities were encumbered with unwieldy roll strength, menaced by student unrest and bard-pressed to see to their obligations towards the affiliated college, which bore the bulk of tertiary education in the country.
The objectives of the University is not only to ease the situation but also to improve the standard of education by upgrading the curriculum and syllabuses and ensuring academic discipline in all spheres. The University along with its own academic programme is vested with powers to affiliated college and with its coming into existence, all the college, so long affiliation to other Universities of the country, excepting those teaching agriculture, engineering and medical science have come under its jurisdiction.

The University has thus as have stature with a justification encompassing the whole country. The speciality of National University consists in its being a Post-Graduate university as well as an affiliating University. Its prime focus is on the development of the campus offering diversified course at the higher level. It has already a school and a centre and meanwhile it has established a number of institutes. The institutes are aimed at providing courses of higher level leading to M Phil and PhD degrees. One institutes namely the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences as opened two years ago to offer MS course is now close to delivering its first batch of students. The MS degree is an interdisciplinary degree equivalent to M. Phil degree which is intensive enough to help the students pursue PhD courses in different disciplines. The course is also open to faculty members who are employed in different universities and colleges. Four more institutes namely (1) The Institute of Liberation and Bangladesh Studies (2) The Institutes of National Science (3) The Institute of Life Sciences and (4) The Institute of Business and Management Studies with all the formalities complete towards their constitutions are all the formalities complete towards their constitution are soon to function to provide higher courses related to science, needs of life, and to national heritage.
Teachers Training as provided in the University is both intensive and extensive in nature and of a high academic standard. Very few of our teachers teaching at honours and masters level have to their credit higher training. The training, programme of the University is designed to augment the knowledge of the college teachers, enhance their skill in teaching and in general to get them an exposure to higher ideas. Eminent educationists and scholars of the country are associated with the various academic programmes provided in the campus.
The University has at present, four academic units, namely (a) School of Under Graduate Studies (b) Centre for Post Graduate Education, Training & Research (c) Centre for Curriculum Development and Evaluation and (d) Institute of Post -Graduate studies.
The School and Centres are to organize education in colleges and improve its standard. The University provides bachelors, honours and masters degrees in ten disciplines namely languages, humanities, social science, commerce and business administration, physical sciences, mathematical sciences, biological science, education, law and computer technology.
Apart from the units providing campus teaching, the university has been its components about one thousand colleges. These colleges under its academic control cater for courses leading to Pass, Honours and Masters degrees to different disciplines. The University exercises academic control over the college. It provides the curricular and syllabuses, gives guideline for admission, arrange inspection, holds examination, publishes results and awards certificates.
A close liaison is maintained between the University and the colleges. The University acts so to say as the nerve centre of all academic activities of the affiliated college.
The curricular and syllabuses of different courses of the colleges are being standardised and modernised in consonance with national ideology. The new syllabuses came into effect from the last academic session.
