The term "going Bamboo" is an old Naval term once used by the Royal Navy and the East India Company. It refers to employees stationed in or sent to Indonesia, India, Philippines, and Malaysia who decide to not return home after prolonged stays. It implies a complete detachment of the familiar in the sense of a cultural shock acceptance and an overwhelming feeling of absolute spiritual peacefulness.
