The article Tim Finin has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. [edit] License tagging for Image:Scilogo.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:Scilogo.gif. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Gilli7.jpg

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Gilli7.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. When you use a generic fair use tag such as {{fair use}} or {{fair use in|article name}}, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Yamla 17:48, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Discussion on Ghilli Image

You said: "I uploaded the Ghilli image because it was a promotional image by the movie makers, and no other suitable image was availble in the public domain. If you see the images files of many other movies, only this rationality is used."

I'm not sure which image you are talking about, but this rationale is unsuitable for an image of a living person. It fails WP:FUC. --Yamla 01:44, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
If you are talking about the image on Ghilli, it is tagged with a no-rationale tag because you have not yet provided a detailed hand-written fair-use rationale justifying its use on that page. --Yamla 01:45, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
You said: "Before uploading, I researched a few other images in Wikipedia and came to a conclusion that it constitutes fair use due to the three rules stated in a much older Wikipedia page in: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:007Moore.jpg"
Those aren't the rules. The rules are at WP:FU. However, you have now added the missing fair-use rationale and so I have removed my objection. Thanks. --Yamla 01:55, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

You said: "Since the Ghilli image is a valid one, why not this be used in Trisha's page? If we get a better image or a licenced once, then we can remove this image. The rationale: Pages relating to media persons, should not be left without image as it might reduce the popularity of the page."

Please reread WP:FUC. We are only permitted to use a freely-licensed image to depict a person. In the article on Ghilli, you are using it to depict a movie. On Trisha's page, you are using it to depict a living person. Two different uses, one of which violates WP:FUC. It has been decided that the choice is between freely-licensed images (essentially, non-copyrighted images, though this is not quite true) or nothing when it comes to depicting a living person, not between a freely-licensed image or a fair-use image. --Yamla 02:06, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
You said: "I read and re-read the FUC, but couldnt find a clause that would prevent a promotional material from being used for a living person's article. By your reasoning, there wont be any actor page with a photo and this is not what Wikipedian users want. I browsed through dozens of actor images in Wikipedia and they are all promotional images (for eg: Nagesh pic from Server Sundaram). I dont see how these promotional images constitute a violation of Wikipedia's principles, as the picture's original purpose is for extensive spread among the public. By your actions, the only thing that was done was to make the pages totally dull and unattractive."
"No free equivalent is available or could be created that would adequately give the same information[...] However, if the subject of the photograph still exists, a freely-licensed photograph could be taken." If the person is still alive, a freely licensed image could be created. That is, a photograph could be taken of them and released under a free license. Please note that many articles on living people incorrectly use replaceable images. Please tag these images with {{subst:rfu}}. We are working hard to fix these violations but it's going to take time. For example, I monitor about 6000 pages but this is not even one percent of the Wikipedia. --Yamla 02:50, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Rani Mukerjee

Hi, thanks for your note on my talk page.

I was unhappy with your edit to Rani Mukerjee for various reasons, each to do with style rather than content. I would normally fix such minor errors myself, but I was (and am) very busy, and I rather hoped that somebody else (perhaps you yourself) would copyedit and resubmit the edit if the information was considered worthy of inclusion. As it stood, with so many minor errors in so short an edit, I felt that it was questionable whether the edit really improved the article, or detracted from it.

Please consider the following:

1) while her another movie Paheli

Punctuation, slang, style (film titles should be in italics), and particularly grammar.... compare with....

while another film of hers, Paheli

2) edging over black

I do understand this, yet I think that the meaning is somewhat unclear - please revise "edging over", and capitalise and italicise the film title, ie Black

3) Your remark was placed immediately before a reference to an article titled "Black steals the show", which clearly relates to the comment before your remark, and does not actually mention Paheli at all. Please consider placing your comment after the reference (moving the period to the new end of the sentence) so that it this is clear.

Also, please remember to sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~).

I hope that I not caused offense, and that you find this helpful.

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Alaipayuthey01.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Alaipayuthey01.jpg. [edit] Unspecified source for Image:Trimurti2.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Trimurti2.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. [edit] Fallingrain

I am guessing you are referring to latitude and longitude on bot-created articles. The bot did use Fallingrain as it's reference whereever it could find a match for the town name. If it did not find a exact match with the census name, it will not be able to pull the geo-coords in. That's what happened in many towns and cities. Hope that explains. -- Ganeshk (talk) 23:15, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Can you give me a example? -- Ganeshk (talk) 23:19, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
Yes...that's right. Bot created Tiruchendur while it is misspelt as "Tiruchchendur" on Fallingrain website. That's the problem. This discussion has given me ideas about using the "other names" feature of Fallingrain. I could use that in future programming. -- Ganeshk (talk) 01:16, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Mariamman Temple

It would be great if you can provide info about Theemidhi, Chatti and other rituals, but I think it would be more appropirate to include these things in the article Mariamman itself in the Amman temples section. If you plan to discuss in detail, you may well create separate articles for Theemidhi, etc. However, if you still think Mariamman Temple would be the best place to have this stuff, please go ahead with the reversion. ~ srini 03:34, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

I also find that you have created Samayapuram Mariamman Temple using text from the templenet article. You can take information from other websites, reformulate the concept in your own words and submit to wikipedia along with references to original souces, but copy/paste could mean copyright violation. A rewrite of the aricle would be desirable before it gets deleted. ~ srini 03:56, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Balajiviswanathan I know about copyright policies. The article is still in the stub form. It means, I'm currently working on it. It has not matured enough. In the course of next one week. I'm planning to finish this stuff.

The article looks much better now. But there still were a few minor style issues, typos, errors, etc., which I have corrected. With reference to 'project under construction', there is absolutely no urgency... you can take your own time. You can even add inline citations later, but everytime you hit that 'Save page' button after editing an article, you got to make sure the content is free from copyright issues, however small or crude it may be. As User:Mattisse notes below, wikipedia is indexed by search engines and mirrors frequently and it's not good to have copyrighted content here for even a single day. You may argue that there are many other pages in wikipedia that are copy/pasted from external websites, I agree, that's why wherever I find such a thing, I try to clean it up then and there. Anyway, great job in creating Samayapuram Mariamman Temple! ~ srini 08:18, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: temple info

Articles are supposed to be created by editors, not by one person all at once. That defeats the whole purpose of Wikipedia -- it's supposed to be a collaborative effort, not as you say one person working "for the last one week, I've sat day and night". It is much harder to reference an article correctly when it is written as you say it was, by one person. That is called Original Research and it is against Wikipedia policies. See WP:OR.

But however the article is created, its has to have references for its sources. It is Wikipedia policy that any editor can remove information from an article if that information is not sourced.

User:TomTheHand who is an Administrator and expert on referencing always suggest that people lool at this article: 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict to get an idea of what is meant by the non negotiable policy WP:V with a how-to in WP:CITE. Paul McCartney is another example that I like better because it is not a conflict article. I just wrote a really simple article, Teardrops from My Eyes, with references.

Anyway if you don't understand all this, let me know and I will try to help you out. What is you source material? You need to have links to online sources and page numbers and ISBN number for books. Hope this helps. Mattisse(talk) 04:27, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

I did look at the online links. The first link was mostly had "page not found" links or didn't have the information to verify your article. Your article must be verifiable. I didn't check out TempleNet completely because you have already been told that you cannot cut and paste from it. Also, I know what is on TempleNet and a lot of what you have in the article is not from there. Plus, you have to tell people more specifically where the information came from, not just a link to the front page. I will go through your article and put "citation missing" tags on it. That will notifiy people that the article has problems and encourage them to help you find the sources. I'm also willing to help you more, but I can't if I don't know where the information came from. Let me know what I can do for you. (Don't worry -- Wikipedia is supposed to be a process with everyone working on an article -- it's not expected that it be perfect right away.) Mattisse(talk) 04:55, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
O.K. but the part under Mythology was a word-for-word copy from Templenet, so I had to remove it. Wikipedia can be sued for copyright violations so they are very strict about that. Where in the first link is there any useful information? I can't find it. Under what link is it? Mattisse(talk) 05:13, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] no copyvio even for one day

Wikipedia articles get mirrored thousands of times through Google etc. If you have an article up for even one day, in the next day or two it will be all over the internet. Then Templenet will notice -- I'm sure they keep their eye on Wikipedia anyway as it is very commom for people to just lift their stuff. Just write the article one sentence at a time. I wrote most of Chennakesava Temple and if you look in the History you can see how long it took me before other people helped. But that's O.K. That's what being a stub is about. Here's another I wrote Chidambaram Temple -- which you can see needs more work and a good picture. Here's another Badami Cave Temples that looks better because of the pictures! Some temples I've gotten no where with -- it's hard to find the information. Do you know User:Dineshkannambadi. He know a great deal about temple architecture and also comes up with some wonderful pictures too. He is also organizing the temple project and coming up with consensus rules. He feels, except for a few temples, most temples should be merged with the town they are in and maybe he is right. He says its because the life of a town centers around the temples, plus there are too many temples with the same name. And too many different ways the names are spelled. Mattisse(talk) 05:39, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Too tired now. Tomorrow -- or really, later today as it is already tomorrow! Talk to you later. Mattisse(talk) 07:15, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

I would have to disagree about ISKCON. ISKCON is the most familiar form of Hinduism outside of India (thought BAPS is the biggest). ITs also a prime target for vandals, so its a high priority to keep in order. ITs ok though, I probably will make a mistake on a Tamil Nadu related article sometime. too. [edit] Hindu temples - question

I'm confused with what is happening with the Hindu temple issue. Chennakesava Temple is an example of what User:Dineshkannambadi is doing. He is working on a coordinated effort regarding Hindu temple architecture. See Hoysala architecture for another example, as well as Somanathapura and Doddagaddavalli. What is the focus of your articles, that is, is the aim just to generate an article on every temple? From what I understand from User:Dineshkannambadi, that is pretty much impossible as there are so many temples and the same temple can have many different names. Plus the same name is often used for many different temples. I believe some thought must be put in to developing some organizing facter. Just my opinion. Mattisse(talk) 14:00, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ayyavazhi

Hai friend,

Why did you placed the NPOV templete in Ayyavazhi article? Where the article loss the Npov - Paul 23:20, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

The citations are from University papers(books); University papers are valid primary sources to be cited as per wikipedia guidelines.
And the Christian missionary reports are valid in Ayyavazhi matters. Because, they are of anti-Ayyavazhi view. They call Ayyavazhi and Vaikundar as satanic agents in series of LMS Reports. So view points on one thing, from opposite side is valid.
The book "Religion and Subalter Agency" is a reserch book from University of Madras based on study on Ayyavazhi from 33 top known theologians from Ayyavazhi. So it may not be considered as a questionable book.
Then Ayyavazhi is not a sect of Hinduism. There are many reasons. See this discussion (in this matter If you need I will give detailed reasons, we will go for a long discussion) The only lack is the official recognition. There are many reasons see this discussion. I placed only this discussion for you to know about the resons behind. Thats all.
Then what you called as unverfied claims?
Thank You. - Paul 23:49, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Dear Balajiviswanathan,

The issue of the disproportionately vast presence of the Ayyavazhi sect in WP has been a problem for a long time. See [4], [5], [6], [7], etc If you also see the number of pages this user has inserted links to the Ayyavazhi pages, you will realise the magnitude of the problem. I have been deleting these insertions where I find them. However it is a hard task if one editor insists on doing this day in day out. BTW User:Paul Raj is suspected to be the same as User:Vaikunda Raja. He also uses a number of anonymous ips to spam WP. - Parthi talk/contribs 00:02, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Friend, Why you mentioned Ayyavazhi works as hoax in the discussion pages of other users? See this link for the book
Three districks are declared as a holiday for Ayyavazhi festivals in Tamil Nadu. Toothukkudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari are declared holiday on March 4th for Ayya Vaikunda Avataram. No other temples festivals are announced a holiday for 3 districts. Will the holiday be announced for two or three followers?
The reason for lack of Online sources are see this discussion
I feel really hurt. Am I cheating wiki? friend, I am ready for an open discussion. Please don't use such words. Thank you. - Paul 00:19, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
Tearing up? Friends, Understand the situation.
Ayyavazhi is seen within the hinduism so far. Any thing highlightable in Ayyavazhi is seen as that of hindu. But the basic structure is not Hindu. This religion has seperate Holy places, scriptures, theology etc.. Apart from Some University papers there are no external sources. Some reserch papers revealed this deviation of Ayyavazhi from Hinduism. And I cited them.
Why did you tell University papers as Non valid? Please see the discussion with User:Venu62
No web sources to cite more than a few that are found in the external link areas on Ayyavazhi article.
You consider any thing other than Online sources are not valid? Please see the above cited discussion of User:Doctor Bruno for the reason.
Also all Ayyavazhi article are cited from University papers.

Why all of you comming against me like this. Again I am telling I was citing with University papers. Please Understand Friends - Paul 00:47, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

The Hindu Report(Scroll down) shows the declaration for Tirunelveli from this year. Also, Many Tamil News papers published news. But in Eng wiki it could not be cited . Also Daily thanthi and Dinakaran came with e-paper facility only two or three months back . So it may not be verified online.
If you need citations offline I shall give. - Paul 01:02, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Mediation

I strongly urge you two to take your dispute to Wikipedia:Mediation. You both care about the issue passionately; I cannot see how it will be resolved without damage other than by mediation. --Tagishsimon (talk)

Okay, specifically, I would take it here: Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal and frame it as a question of what is and what is not a religion for wikipedia purposes with respect to portals and categories. Follow their process. --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:51, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
What help are you hoping for from EssJay? The procedure at Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal seems straightforward. List your case, wait 2-14 days and a mediator will appear and start talking to you. --Tagishsimon (talk)

[edit] Ayyavazhi

You going on moving rudely against Ayyavazhi articles. Please understand friend. I've cite dwith Newspaper report. The govet have dsclared the festival day as a holiday. This itself is an indirect proof for the existence of the religion. More over the reserch books from proffessors are used as citation in the ayyavazhi article. Many books are from external sources. LMS reports, which call Vaikundar and Ayyavazhi as satanic agents are used as citation for the spread of the religion.

Also please go through the previous discussions once again for the risks in the matter of Ayyavazhi. No one is cheating any body. You compared Ayyavazhi to Micky mouse etc.. Please understand that myself is also a human being. - Paul 01:53, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

You can understand Tamil.
See this with patience It was from different discussions across the web and is not used as citation. But if you are honestly doubting the existence of Ayyavazhi, the following link will show you. This was the link from Tamil Wikipedia once I collected for a tamil user. Please see it without enimity. This is just for reference. Please understand the situation. Don't fear me with the words Speedy deletion, Tear up, etc.. Please.

Thank You. - Paul 02:17, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ayyavazhi

Friend, Again why you are in complete speed towards deleting Ayyavazhi? I've cited that Ayyavazhi is a religion by the University release, Religion and Subaltern Agency. Why you are not considering the offline notabilities? Generelly this is the problem with India related works. Please see this(scroll down for the discussion of User:Chancemill) Also offline sources are again important to inda related articles. Please see the discussion of User:Doctorbruno I cited earlier. Commonly, even reserch Books from Universities lack ISBN status in India.

Please stop the effort of deleting. Again Try to Understand the situation,

Right from the biggining I started editing, I am trying to make understand the users. I had to make use of a lot of time and effort to make them understand. After some days another user use to come with the same issue. Then I've to repeat all these to them. So,

Friend, understand Please - Paul 16:44, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] History fo Tamil Nadu

The statement about the lack of solid historical evidence is valid as it is in the article as there has been very few found so far. The megalithic finds are not valid as evidence for 'Tamil history'. They are simply evidence of human habitation in the region. Literary dating is not acceptable as no one can firmly say when Tolkappiyam and Tirukkural were written. - Parthi talk/contribs 00:52, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your views on Hindu denominations

I saw your talk with GourangaUK and I agree with you. I seriously doubt that more than 500 million Hindus (which is supposed to be the number of Vaishnavites) have never worshipped Shiva, Ganesha and others devas/devis. There are probably some exclusive worshippers, but I doubt that they are the majority. These "sects" that that the Western scholars has put are used to divide Hindus. But Hinduism is much more diverse and united than four sects. Some villagers worship their own gods along with the main ones. There are some who even worship Ravana and others who say even Jesus Christ and Allah areultimately the same thing as Bhagawan. GizzaChat © 07:44, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Info box ugly - why aren't you discussing it on Talk page?

You tell others to do it, so why not you? Mattisse(talk) 01:57, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

I agree with Mattisse on this one - the info box looks out of place. I don't see a need for it on the article (Jagannath Temple (Puri)). Why treat pages on Hindu temples and deities any differently to other subjects? Ys, GourangaUK 11:05, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
Boxes look good on plant articles, but not on all Hindu related subjects. It makes them look like 'Top Trumps' cards, rather than an enclopedia entry. That's IMHO anyway. Regards, GourangaUK 14:43, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] You can't just decide to put it in the fair use categpry

Read Wikipedia:Fair use. To quote a small part:

---Images---

There are a few categories of copyrighted images where use on Wikipedia has been generally approved as likely being fair use when done in good faith in Wikipedia articles involving critical commentary and analysis. Such general approval must be seen in the light of whether a free image could replace the copyright image instead.

  • Cover art. Cover art from various items, for identification and critical commentary (not for identification without critical commentary).
  • Team and corporate logos. For identification. See Wikipedia:Logos.
  • Stamps and currency. For identification.
  • Other promotional material. Posters, programs, billboards, ads. For critical commentary.
  • Film and television screen shots. For critical commentary and discussion of the cinema and television.
  • Screenshots from software products. For critical commentary.
  • Paintings and other works of visual art. For critical commentary, including images illustrative of a particular technique or school.
  • Publicity photos. For identification and critical commentary. See Wikipedia:Publicity photos.

[edit] Image:Tirupathi.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Tirupathi.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Ganeshk (talk) 19:11, 19 November 2006 (UTC) ==

I see you disputing the replaceable fairuse tag. Free content is one of five pillars of Wikipedia. The picture of Tirupathi temple can be easily snapped by one of thousands of visitors every day. Restricting fairuse pictures will get more people to contribute free content to the Commons. See Wikipedia_talk:Fair_use for more discussion. Hope that explains. -- Ganeshk (talk) 19:20, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Categorisation

Well, thanks for clarification! Yes, what you have done is a sensible thing. While arranging Temples by location, diety etc we should also remember that if anybody from the other hemisphere wants to get a full view of Temples of INDIA, would that be possible? I hope you will take care of that when you rearrange the categories. – VMO 11:39, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hindu

Hi, Balaji, I was wondering whether you or other editors can replace the image (i.e., Khajuraho at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindu#Religion_for_the_common_Hindu with a non-sexual image? It gives the wrong impression about the article, religion for the common Hindu.

[edit] Tamil-literature-stub and India-literature-stub

Hi - I see you have created two new stub types. As it clearly explains at WP:STUB, and at the top of most stub categories, all new stub types should be proposed prior to creation at WP:WSS/P, so that they can be checked for viability, and to make sure they don't go against either the stub category hierarchy or stub naming conventions. In the case of your new stub type, it was not proposed, and it is possible that it will not reach the standard threshol;d of 60 current stubs for it to be considered viable. The stub types have been listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Discoveries - please make any comments as to the reasons for and possible population of this new stub type. Be warned that they may be nominated for deletion via WP:SFD if deemed not to conform to normal stub type criteria. Please, in future, if you wish to create a new stub type, propose it first! Grutness...wha? 04:30, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

I was creating a couple of literature articles didnt find any stub category to fit them. So, created them. I'm not aware of the stub creation process, so if there is one kindly fit these in. Or if there is any existing stub category that applies to Indian/Tamil literature related articles, kindly let me know.

Stubwise, literature is split mainly by genre, not by language or place of origin - poetry uses poetry-stub, romance novels use romance-novel-stub, children's books use child-book-stub, and so on. Writers are split by nationality, though (and there is an India-writer-stub). Grutness...wha? 09:39, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Kali

I moved the following comment from the top to the bottom where it belongs. It is not my comment. It was left by Dipendra2007...

[User:Dipendra2007] Hi, I notice that you have used an atypical version of the Kali image Image:Kali2.JPG. We think that it gives out an incorrect interpretation of the Goddess, could you alter it to more mainstream one?

The Goddess Kali is a complex deity. In villages of North Sri Lanka and in Nepal she is often viewed in an un-iconic form without the elaborate iconography that the picture you posted depicts. She is seen as pure power that shatters all limitations that confront the devotee - be they mundane or spiritual. Interesting, the bandit queen - Phulan Devi who belonged to a scheduled caste herself always sought the blessings of the Goddess. So did the robber tribe called the thuggees in the ravines of Chambal.

The picture you have uploaded incidentally is grotesque, hideous and would be seen as demonic by a casual non-Hindu who reads the article. It does not do justice to the complex strands that define concept under consideration. Why not use a more mainstream picture or just the face. The Bengal school of iconography i.e. the two eyes with the tilak on the forehead stands out. Or the south-Indian Bhadrakali i.e. of Kali emerging from the fire. Thank you and may all blessings be upon you one month ahead of the lunar new year - i.e. Ugadi. --- This unsigned comment was left by Dipendra2007

There is no "We" in this discussion. It is him and only him. Please do not think that more than one person is upset by the picture. So far there are only three people involved in the discussion (including myself, Dipendra2007, and another editor). Dipendra2007 is the only person who objects to it. [edit] Kali picture

The picture Image:Kali2.JPG that you uploaded has become part of a debate on the Kali talk page (See here). There is a user named Dipendra2007 who keeps on deleting it off of the Kali page because he doesn't feel it's an appropriate image of the goddess (which is POV). I am requesting that you join the discussion to help resolve any problems that there may be. You should have a say in the matter because it's your picture. Thanks. [edit] Re: AFI 100 years

If this were a content dispute, I would happily agree with you. But I don't believe it is a content dispute -- in my opinion, this is a copyright issue, which means there's very little (if any) room for negotiation or compromise. If it's copyright infringement, there's really no way it can stay on the wiki; copyright is a non-negotiable, foundation-level policy. That said, I do not intend to offend, and apologize if I have. – Luna Santin (talk) 08:05, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Problem is, though, "permission to use in Wikipedia" isn't enough. Wikipedia is licensed under GFDL, which means that text needs to be released for anyone to use for any purpose, including derivative and commercial uses -- if you're looking to get AFI's permission, you might want to see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. This is also a good time to point out "©2006 American Film Institute. All rights reserved." at the bottom of AFI's website -- unless you can find something saying differently, it distinctly appears to be copyrighted. – Luna Santin (talk) 08:19, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
I'd say the Oscars are a bit of a different situation. But, do feel free to comment at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard#AFI 100 Years... series and copyright. – Luna Santin (talk) 08:31, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Hmm... I'll think on that, that's a point. But I would seriously encourage you to comment at the WP:AN thread, to make sure your voice is heard. – Luna Santin (talk) 08:41, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
If you really want to settle the issue, you could ask them to contact OTRS and say that -- instructions for doing so can be found at Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. If they do that, an OTRS member will tag the relevant article permissions to note the release, and that generally doesn't get challenged, in my experience. – Luna Santin (talk) 00:14, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
If you didn't already do it, just forwarding the e-mail you got to permissions-en AT wikimedia DOT org is enough. And when that article gets tagged, leave me a note so I can undelete the list that was already deleted. Thanks. - Bobet 13:29, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
When someone looking at the permission emails gets around to it, he/she will add a line on the article's talk page, similar to this. I don't think the system really makes much sense, since I'm pretty sure a lot of those things get lost because they're so inconspicuous and generally won't mean anything to an editor looking at a talk page. In any case, regarding the diff above, I had forwarded an email to the same address you did, and it took someone around 5 days to get around to adding the ticket#. I've no idea how long it usually takes. And no one actually ever replied to me. - Bobet 20:40, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Nah, there's nothing I could do that you already didn't. - Bobet 16:48, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
Just checking in; any updates? :) – Luna Santin (talk) 21:47, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
Hm, that's too bad. =\ If you know your ticket number, I can try to get somebody to look at it (no idea, but worth a shot). – Luna Santin (talk) 22:30, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

I've unblocked the IP at your request, however, that was not the original complaint directed at the IP. Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Srirangam.gif. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

You had originally tagged it as being public domain due to age, but this photograph is clearly not 100 years old. It needs an accurate teg. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation.– Quadell (talk) (random) 20:14, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot (talk) 20:20, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Bkvlogo.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. [edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Arasavalli.jpg}

Thank you for uploading Image:Arasavalli.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page.
