Von Campenhausen family did not originate from Sweden (it originated from what is now Netherlands, but already in 1492 there are records of the family having arrived in Riga) and the branch to which BvC was born in 1772 was Baltic German, i.e. had been German-speakers for several centuries before that (also during the time when Livonia belonged to Sweden and the family became members of Swedish aristocracy -- however by 1772 that would have applied to only those members of the family still resident in Sweden, but not those in Livonia).

See [ http://www.riddarhuset.se/jsp/index.jsp?id=553 ] this from "the Swedish Peerage Book", Sveriges Adelskalender, a catalogue listing all the living members of the Swedish nobility:

Adliga ätten von Campenhausen

Ingress Enligt traditionen (uppgift i den adlades sköldebrev) skall ätten härstamma från Spanska Nederländerna. Namnet uppträder i Riga redan 1492. Dennes sonson, generallöjtnanten i rysk tjänst Johan Baltasar von Campenhausen, upphöjdes i svenskt friherrligt stånd 1744 11/6 men tog aldrig introduktion i denna egenskap.
