Does anyone know about the Landlord in Brownhall? He was one of the more generous hearted of his kind. During the famine he went to great lenths - and personal expense - to help his starving tenants.
There is a book called 'John Hamilton of Donegal' 1800-1884 by Dermot James. It was published in 1998 by The Woodfield Press and was based on his journal which was owned by one of his descendents who lived in the area until recently. If it is out of print you might find it on a website like Alibris which sells out-of-print books.

I added the piece on the Bay Bush - does anyone know when it was cut down? Or, for posterity, who cut it down?

I added a short note on this topic. Does any one have anything else on relations between the religious communities - historically, have the two communities always got on?
It would also be interesting to know when the planters arrived in the area?

Does anyone know when fairs ended on the Cow Market? Are bonfires still held on the cow market on St. John's 23rd june? Or has the encroachment of housing put a stop to this?
That planning was granted to that monstrous house above the road is a shocking indictment of how indifferent Donegal Co. Council is to the environment. That house, cutting open the skyline behind the village, is a form of scenic vandalism. It hurts the eye. Sad.

I'm not totally sure when the Bay Bush was cut down, but it's about 25 years ago I think. I've been told that the late Patsy Harkin was the person who cut it down, but I cannot guarantee that is right. I'll look into it further.
BTW, that book, Drumhome, is it possible to get it anywhere? I had a copy but it was lost years ago!
=> I wonder if the four masters would have a copy? Probably not on their shelves, but they may have a warehouse. I think I have a copy of the book somewhere. It's certainly out of print. The late Bernard Egan was the only local historian that I'm aware of who did any research specifically on Drumhome/Ballintra. His work was a fine start, but I believe there are a lot of original sources such as census, parish records, old newspapers, and perhaps even people still alive, which could be used to build on Egan's fine start.
