Ballina, according to all reports I've ever seen, was named after an Aboriginal word, bullinah (or something close to it) and was changed to Ballina. Its resemblance to the Irish town is a coincidence. I'll research this one and make any changes accordingly. Peter1968 02:36, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

User:203.221.62.84 added this sentence to the "Name" section of the article: "In late 2005, a petition for changing the name to the Germanic name of Bromberg was only just defeated." Sounds unlikely to me. Does anyone have a source to support it? Blarneytherinosaur talk 04:39, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

I've just removed this quote from the article "and a common greeting in ballina is "hail the prawn" this can be very confusing for turists . " An amusing piece of vandalism (unless of course there is a source!). Blarneytherinosaur talk 12:02, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Whaling

I assume this is the place referenced by Harry Robertson in The Ballina Whalers? Does Ballina have a history as a whaling station? Bastie 23:33, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

That could be right. There was a bit of whaling about in the early days of Australia (more so New Zeland), and I don't know of anywhere else called Ballina. Blarneytherinosaur talk 01:09, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
