[edit] Culture

The people of Ballycumber have a rich and varied culture. In the past they have been known to get their kicks from such activities as eating frogs, gambling on small plastic yellow ducks floating down a river on the first Sunday in May, or racing clapped out mules around Morgans field on the aforementioned Sunday. Nowadays you're much more likely to find the local folk resting on a high stool in one of the five pubs in the village, complaining about their close geographical proximity to Pollagh.

[edit] Activities

The principal pastime of young Ballycumber males, as well as those not so young, is the heroic pursuit of a county title with their beloved Ballycumber GAA club. Success in this campaign was last and only achieved back in the year nineteen and sixty nine, however that hasn't stopped some of the more mature gentlemen from the footballing dynasty of Bellair bringing up the fact at every football match or related event since.

Indeed the commitment of those involved in this noble quest for the elusive Dowling cup is second only to their commitment to sinking pints on any given Saturday night in one of the village taverns. Those who can still support their body weight unassisted come the hour of midnight generally make the arduous trek to the nearby towns of either Moate or Tullamore in search of some "easy young'one" or, failing that, copious amounts of vodka and red bull. The night will generally then conclude with a fruitless search for a house-party followed by a two hour wait for the local hackney driver who promised he'd be there in "sure about five or ten minutes".
