Coordinates: 25°48′N 84°12′E / 25.8, 84.2 Ballia is a city and a municipal board in Ballia district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is located on the banks of Ganges river; it is the district headquarters of Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh. Ballia is most estern district of UP. The langage mostly spoken in Ballia is Bhojpuri, a dialect of Hindi. Two main rivers – the Ganges and the Ghaghara – meet on the city's eastern boundary. An annual fair, the Dadari-Mela, is celebrated on a fairground at this river junction.

Ballia is the birth place of Mangal Pandey,Acharya Hajari Prasad Divedi, Gauri Shankar Rai ( Ex - MP) and late Mr. Chandrashekhar (Ex PM).

Ballia is located at 25.45° N 84.10° E.^[1] It has an average elevation of 55metres (180ft).

At the 2001 Indian census,^[2] Ballia had a population of 102,226. Males constituted 54% of the population and females 46%. It had an average literacy rate of 65%, higher than the national average of 59.5%, with 58% of the males and 42% of females literate. 11% of the population was under six years of age. It was one of the most active centres of the Indian Freedom Struggle before 1947. In fact it had attained freedom for a brief period in August 1942, and declared itself as " Baagi Ballia "(meaning Revolutionary Ballia). Some stalwarts in the field of its progress and development process were Lt. Shri Chittu Pandey, Pt Tarkeshwar Pandey and Lt. Babu Murli Manohar ji. Standing in sharp contrast to its some of its neighbouring townships, Ballia is a unique place in its own respect with considerably good educational facilities, though there is a constant demand for development in the field of its civic structure.
