Balle (runemaster)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Balle (Old Norse: BalliR) or Red-Balle (Old Norse: Rauð-BalliR) was a runemaster who flourished in Sweden during the second half of the 11th century. He is a representative of the Urnes style.[1]
He has signed about 20 runestones in south-western Uppland and northern Södermanland, and he often signed in the form of Old Norse poetry (e.g. the Ågersta Runestone). There are also an additional 30 runestones that may be attributed to him.
However, due to differences in ornamentation and orthography, it is not certain whether Balle and Red-Balle, who signed the Odendisa Runestone and a stone in Lilla Kyringe, were one and the same person.
