Baldinger's Market

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baldinger's Market is a small store located along U.S. Route 19 in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The store is located just south of Zelienople, and north of the retail centers in Cranberry Township.

The store is not only well known locally, but also nationally for its penny candy and "Foods from all Nations." Constructed in 1933, the candy store has been visited by people from all over the United States and throughout the world.[1] The market has also been featured on CBS and several food and travel channels.[2] In 2008, the store will not only be celebrating its 75th Anniversary; it may also be the closing year for the popular candy shop. Plans have been made to close down the store in June, but these plans have been met with opposition from people in the community who do not want it to be closed down and demolished.

Baldinger's Market will relocate to downtown Zelienople. Local businessman Pat Boylan bought the market and plans to re-create an exact replica of the old store -- inside and out -- in a building at 519 Perry Way, near the Exxon station in Zelienople. He hopes to open the new store in July 2008, but the old store will stay open until its new location is ready. All of the old cases, coolers, butcher block furniture and shelving will be moved to the new site along with the heralded cash register that rings with each turn of the crank.
