Experience

1957-1981 Professor of Structural Analysis and Mechanics, Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University.

1953-1957 Head of Reinforced Concrete Research Laboratory, Cairo University.

1937-1957 Demonstrator in the Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University, Lecturer and Assistant Professor

1936-1937 Engineer in the Irrigation Department, Ministry of Public Works

1949-1981 Consulting Engineer in partnership with Dr. Ahmed Moharram responsible for the said Consulting Office operations for two years (April 1962 – March 1964). In 1964, the partnership took the name “Arab Consulting Engineers (Prof. Dr. Ahmed Moharram – Prof. Dr. Michel Bakhoum)”, know as ACE: Arab Consulting Engineers (Moharram – Bakhoum). Prof. Bakhoum was responsible for many diverse projects.

The Consulting Firm designed many Buildings, Bridges, Shells, Industrial Factories, and other structures in Egypt and in the Middle East. The firm contributed a lot to the introduction of Prestressed Concrete Structures in Egypt.


Member of the Committee set up by the Building Research Institute in Egypt for drawing up specifications for reinforced and prestressed concrete

Supervisor of several researches for the degree of M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Reinforced Concrete, Prestressed Concrete, and Structural Analysis and Mechanics at Cairo University.

Author of many technical papers, class notes, and books in Structural Engineering.

Participated actively in international conferences on reinforced and prestressed concrete.

Contributed to the design of several Churches, and The structural design for St. Mark Cathedral in Abassia, Cairo, Egypt.


Awards

1931 Prince Omar Tosson Award in 1931, for being the first in his class over all Egyptian Students for Diploma of Finishing Secondary School. (البكالوريا – الثانوية العامة)

1960 Egyptian Republic Award (3rd Degree) (وسام الجمهورية - الطبقة الثالثة)

1963 Award for Science and Arts ( العلوم والفنون - الطبقة الاولى)

1964 Award for Trade and Industry (التجارة والصناعة - الطبقة الاولى)

1966 Award from FIP (International Federation for Prestressed Concrete) for design of Prestressed Shells, with World Span Record, in 1966.


From his Friends and Colleagues

After his death, one of his colleagues, Prof. Dr. Sayed Ali Mortada (Prof. of Concrete Design at Alexandria University), wrote and obituary that was published in the Journal of the Egyptian Engineering Society, the translation of which reads: Prof. Dr. Michel Bakhoum, a prominent star who shone in the sky of the 20th Century. He was an able Professor, a profound researcher, and an outstanding Structural Engineer… He had a surpassing capacity for perseverance to work and for distinctive output. His works are a great evidence for his superiority during his life and will remain as an everlasting memory.
