Bakke, Norway

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bakke is a former municipality in Vest-Agder county, Norway.

The parish of Bakke was split in three formannskapsdistrikt January 1, 1838: Vestre Bakke, Østre Bakke and Gyland. (This because the main parish Bakke was divided by the border between the counties of Rogaland and Vest-Agder, and the annex Gyland belonged to another jurisdiction.) This was, however, a bad decision, since the three municipalities had very low populations of its own. The county border was moved westwards to its current position in August 1838, and the parish of Bakke was established as a jurisdiction of its own. The three municipalities were then merged together in November 1839.

According to the 1835 census the municipality had a population of 2,378. In 1849 the district Sirdal was separated from Bakke to become a municipality of its own, and on 31 December 1893 the same thing happened to Gyland. After the last split Bakke had a population of 1,368.

On 1 January 1960 the district Øksendal with 226 inhabitants was reunited with Sirdal, and on 1 January 1965 the rest of Bakke was incorporated into Flekkefjord. Prior to the merger Bakke had a population of 925.
