Coordinates: Bagpat (Hindi: बागपत, Urdu: باغ پت) is a city and a municipal board in Baghpat district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is the administrative headquarters of Bagpat District.
The Baghpat city is located on the banks of river [Yamuna] at 28 deg 57' North Latitude and 77 deg 13' East Longitude. It is 52 KM from [Meerut] City and is on the main [Delhi] –[Sharanpur] Highway around 40 KM from Delhi toward north.
Baghpat District was established as a separate district in 1997. Prior to District, Baghpat was a Tehsil under [Meerut] in western [Uttar Pradesh].[1]

As of 2001 India census,[3] Baghpat had a population of 36,365. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Baghpat has an average literacy rate of 46%, lower than the national average of 59.5%; with 62% of the males and 38% of females literate. 20% of the population is under 6 years of age.

It was founded by the Pandava brothers of Mahabharata as Vyagprastha. Barnava, near Binauli is the site of the Lakshagriha, the lac palace that was built by Mayasura, the demon architect, to kill the Pandavas.
The district has a strong presence of Jainism. Bada Gaon is an important pilgrimage center for Jains. It is located near the town of Khekra. Here is a place called pakke ghat where one of the popular shankaracharya Swami Savroopanand ji had got gyana.
Bagpat is centre point for Meerut Delhi and Saharanpur main cities.
It is situated near famous Jamuna river.

Sqn Ldr S.P. Singh, former coach of Indian Kabaddi team and Asiad gold medalist belonged to Bandpur village of Khekra Tehsil in Baghpat. Also he was the coach of the gold medal winning kabaddi team at the SAF games in Madras 1995. He has made his motherland proud by winning medals at several international and national events. For his achievements he was felicitated by Shri. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former prime minister of India.
Recently, youngsters from the district have shown great performance in other sports also such as boxing and shooting.[citation needed]
