Bagong Silangan

Bagong Silangan is a barangay located in the 2nd district of Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. Nearby barangays are Commonwealth, Batasan Hills and Payatas. Separated by a river in the east, the barangay leads to the Municipality of San Mateo in the province of Rizal.

Bagong Silangan was once a squatters' area. When former Mayor Ismael A. Mathay, Jr. granted the rights of land ownership to the barangay people, some long-termed conflicts have been solved. Since then, population has been rapidly increasing and a continuing growth of children dependents is visible.

Bagong Silangan is divided into different main areas (or purok), namely:

Bagong Silangan is the home to public schools of School District XI like Bagong Silangan Elementary School (School ID: 136539), currently headed by Paulino M. Medrano, Jr., the school's principal [1]; and Bagong Silangan High School (School ID: 305332), currently headed by Sylvia H. Campos, the school's principal. [2] These schools are both located at Villamor Street. Here you can also find the San Isidro Labrador Parish; Barangay Hall (the second largest barangay hall in District 2); Geronimo Park (formerly Adelina Park), where sports competitions and programs by the Barangay and Sanggunian Kabataan Council are held.

Other areas in Bagong Silangan include Humanity Village, Bona Subdivision, Sipna Compound (headquarters of Tambuli ng Maralita, the sectoral newspaper of the Filipino Urban Poor) [3], Covenant Village, Area C, Sitio Kumunoy, Country Homes, Filside, Brookside, and Rolling Hills.

As of November 30, 2005, the population of the barangay has reached 32, 497. [4]

The incumbent Barangay chairman is Armando E. Endaya. Barangay elections in October will be held. Positions for barangay chairman, barangay kagawad, SK chairman, and SK kagawad will be competed by candidates.

[edit] People and Culture

Bagong Silangan is a growing barangay in Quezon City composed of people who came from different parts of the country. Tagalog is the language being spoken, and some minor conversations in some areas are spoken through the native tongue.

The barangay is also the home to informal settlers who occupy not only vast tracts of public and private lands but also riverbanks, creeksides, aqueducts and transmission lines. [5]
