Coordinates: Bagalkot (ಬಾಗಲಕೋಟೆ in Kannada) is a town in the Indian state of Karnataka. Bagalkot is the district headquarters of the Bagalkot district of the state. Bagalkot district was carved from Bijapur (Vijapur) district following district reorganisation carried out by the J.H.Patel government.

It is learnt from inscriptions that the old name for this town was Bagadige. A legend says that during ancient times this town was gifted to the Vajantries (musicians) by Ravana the king of Lanka who ruled this part. Later, under successive dominions of Vijayanagar emperors, Peshwas, Hyderali of Mysore, Maratha rulers and finally the British in 1818 A.D.
In 1865, the municipality came into existence and civic amenities were provided to the residents of Bagalkot.
Now the Bagalkot is planned as New Bagalkot (Navanagar) because almatti dam construction & rise of the back water in ghataprabha. The city is now lying divided in to 3 major parts (Bagalkot Navanagar, Bagalkot Old City & Vidyagiri)

Bagalkot is located at [1]. It has an average elevation of 533 metres (1748 feet). It is situated on the bank of the river Ghataprabha.

As of 2001 India census[2], Bagalkot had a population of 91,596. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Bagalkot has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 57% of the males and 43% of females literate. 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
