[edit] Location

It served as an important military location due to its proximity to Uruguayan border only 40 kilometres away. In 1825 and 1827, it was occupied by the Uruguayan.

Historically, Bagé's economy was based on charque (a kind of meat, that is preserved with salt and dries under the sun) produced in ancient farms to feed the slavers of Brazilian colony.

The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bagé.
