[edit] Slapping example Bonin'
Hi Denis, i saw you added Fishbone's 'bonin' in the boneyard' to the list of examples on the slapping page. I know the song and i was wondering if you really think it is a necessary example considering the examples that are already there? Maybe the fact that you are a fan (?) of Fishbone was a factor in you adding it? The song is a good example of slapping, but so are countless others and adding them all as examples on the page would go past the purpose of the list i'd say... i agree w/ you about the unnecessary listing of all songs or bands who use slapping. i had read the discussion before posting and did it in full knowledge. clearly, the fact I'm a Fishbone specialist influenced my choice, but there's more to it. let me explain
- the song has a great slapping solo, towards the 2/3 into the song, which can illustrate perfectly what we are referring to
- Norwood Fisher is definitely a current bassist who has greately influenced other -more famous- bassists and has extended the slappin technique to what he calls plunking (if i remember well)
- Fishbone still currently use slapbass while it's become rather rare for flea for example
i guess i'm more defending the presence of norwood rather than bonin, but i suppose you get my point. I will not fight about it, but i think that Bonin is definitely a better illustration of slapbass than some of the songs already listed there, but then colors and tastes... Well i'd say all of the listed songs are about equally good examples with a possible exception of 'tommy the cat' (i think nobody but Les Claypool should try to do the stuff he is doing). Can't tell about the influence of Norwood Fisher on other players but in the current list the first 5 examples are between 6 and 15 years older than 'Bonin'. In my experience as a bassplayer, not much has been added to the slapping technique since early eighties except maybe an increase in speed (which is hardly an improvement but thats my POV). On the one hand i think that only a limited number of examples are necessary for the article. On the other hand it could be useful to have a lot of examples because it increases the chance that someone interested actually finds one of the examples, plus he can immediately find information about the performers through the links. So i agree there is a point in adding the example of 'Bonin'. Best thing would probably be to take the list out of the article to a separate page and people can make it as extensive as they want. This way people only get confronted with a long list if they're interested. OK thanks for communicating... --Vunzmstr 23:39, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
