Talk:Badminton at the 2008 Summer Olympics - Qualification

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I have said for few times in User talk:Mohsen1248 talk page that BWF still NOT YET publish, so i decide to hide the list until someone can address the source, unfortunately everything i do, he just said NO, however, he can raise any source about the list and always keep violating the verifiability issues. My concerns is not a day and i hope this list can only unveil once BWF publish it or anyone can raise the reliable sources. I hope someone can see my concerns and not just to rollback without any consideration.

And i hope Mohsen1248 can understand the policy of Wikipedia and be civil, as he DIDNOT include any mandatory reason. Introduce more Olympians to reader is no in Wikipedia policy at ALL. --Aleenf1 07:11, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Request third opinion

The problem of the list of players (Here) is that lack of references to support it, so far BWF did not publish any related material about the list of players that will go to Beijing Olympics, and here the guesswork is pretty clear. So, the only solution is link to May 1 ranking, as the current version, and hide the list until it unveil by BWF itself.

Any suggestion to solve the problem, please state. Thank you. --Aleenf1 05:34, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

So, i found the new sources [1] that NZ players could be excluded from Olympics, so thats why i decided to hide it first until BWF publish the confirmed material about list. --Aleenf1 06:26, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Here's a source for the lists: [2]. There have been a lot of concerns over this, but its probably a moot point. Also, you will note that the list as published by the BWF is exactly the same as the list generated by the ranking. I don't have the time to update the list, but I suggest we unlock the page and somebody check the current list versus these published ones. One more note - the WBF website may or may not have the power to mess with your computer, their page is sometimes a little funky. Chazerizer (talk) 17:58, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
thanks ! and i think this reason is enough to unlock the page ! --Mohsen1248 (talk) 17:34, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
WP:THIRD: Don't publish any list unless it's factual and complete. I'm not sure I understand why it's important to have a list of potential players on Wikipedia when that list changes frequently due to rankings. In my opinion, Wikipedia is not the maintainer of the rankings list, and even it does have a place on Wikipedia, that would be under a separate article. This is an article about qualifying for the Olympics, which to me means what process is used - not who are the potential qualifiers. If the qualifications are based on the BWF May 1 rankings, definetely state that and provide a link to the current rankings. Once that list is final and accepted, then it should be included (and properly referenced to a publically available resource). Is there some other agenda (national pride?) regarding this edit war? If so, at least acknowledge to yourself your own biases and account for them.

Page unprotected. But I note Charles Oppermann's above and encourage editors to add only info that what will not change (fast), those are news not encyclopedia content - Nabla (talk) 18:22, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
I'm confused - there are now names of players, but it appears to be a ranking - have all these players qualified for the Olympics? Charles Oppermann (talk) 20:41, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
The 1 May ranking essentially is the qualification system for badminton. The IBF uses a mechanical system (described in the Qualifying criteria section of the article) to determine who is qualified based on those rankings. So, yeah, these are the people who have qualified; it is based on a specific ranking (but one which will no longer change). It's possible that not all of the people on this list will compete (the link Aleen gave above regarding New Zealand is an indication of that—the NZL national committee might elect not to use its qualification places), but they have all qualified. (From what I can tell, the distinction between "will compete" and "has qualified", and lack of clear communication about it, is what led to this edit war mess...) Hope this clarifies things for you! -- Jonel (Speak to me) 02:09, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Zhou Mi

So, BWF release the list, but none the less, one name in women's singles, Zhou Mi already shown exit door by IOC, while name still existing in the list. Several sources can be prove this [3] [4] [5] --Aleenf1 06:10, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Residency problems are a separate concern from qualification. Zhou has qualified for the Olympics, but will not be able to compete because she does not have a Hong Kong passport. This can and should be noted here, but it does not change the fact that she did qualify. -- Jonel (Speak to me) 14:42, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
